The Benefits of Reiki Therapy

Rajan is a botany and chemistry major. He has worked as a poultry breeder for 23 years, breeding layer and broiler parents.

About Reiki Therapy

Reiki is a Japanese healing therapy that heals the body by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. The word "Reiki" is made up of two Japanese words.

  • Rei - meaning "universal" or "higher power"
  • Ki - meaning "life force energy"

So, it can be said that Reiki therapy is, in fact, the transfer of spiritually guided life force energy.

This transfer of energy is done by the "laying on" of the hands, and thus this therapy can also be called healing touch therapy. Reiki therapy channels this life force energy into the Chakras (the body's principal energy centres), through the hands.

Some Reiki practitioners, however, do not place their hands on the body of the clients but keep them some inches away from the body and let the energy flow.

Though Reiki has a spiritual connection, it is not a religion. It does not require faith for it to work.

Branches Of Reiki & History Of Reiki

There are 2 main branches of Reiki.

  • Traditional Japanese Reiki
  • Western Reiki

The main difference between these 2 branches is that Western Reiki relies more on the systematic placement of hands while Traditional Japanese Reiki involves the use of intuitive skills in knowing where to place the hands.

Reiki was developed by a Japanese named Mikao Usui in 1922. While undergoing a 21-day Buddhist training course, Isyu Guo, Mikao Usui is believed to have been endowed spiritual powers and knowledge by way of some mystical revelation. He called this Reiki.

One of Usui's students Chujiro Hayashi developed his own system of Reiki, based on the original Usui Reiki but made simpler, both in teachings and techniques. He laid more emphasis on physical healing.

Hawayo Takata, a Japanese American was initiated into Reiki by Chujiro Hayashi and after she became a Reiki Master, she returned to Hawaii and set up various clinics teaching and treating people all over the United States. To her goes the credit of spreading Reiki in the West.

To make Reiki more understandable and agreeable to the Western world, Takata modified the Traditional Japanese Reiki and developed the Western Reiki.

Reiki Attunements

Reiki is a simple technique to learn. In fact, Reiki is not taught in the traditional sense of the term as it is transferred from the teacher or master to the student by a process called "attunement". Attunement is a process of passing on a special ability that enables the student or learner to tap into the infinite life force energy of the Universe or Higher Power.

Reiki Levels

There are 3 levels or degrees in Reiki going up from level 1 to 3. Each attunement leads to a higher level of healing.

Level I, or Shoden in Japanese

It is a one day class and is the foundation for all other levels of Reiki. Basic hand placement positions for self-treatment and treating others are taught at this level.

A number of attunements are given to the students. The students are made to give self-treatment and others in the class as well.

The attunement received is permanent. After completing level I, a Reiki practitioner can treat himself and others with Reiki.

Level II, or Okuden in Japanese

One has to apply for advancement to level II but the Reiki master has to be confident that the student is ready to move on to this level.

In level II Reiki, Reiki symbols are taught and their meaning explained. It is necessary to know how to draw them and know the power each one has.

The student also receives attunements which raise his power of healing. In this level, sending distance healing with the use of symbols is taught and after achieving level II one can send distance healing to friends, family even animals.

Some teachers suggest that there should be a 3 months' experience of treatment with Reiki after achieving level I. At the minimum, a student should have at least a 3-week experience of treating with Reiki, after reaching the level I.

Level III / Master Level, or Shinpiden in Japanese

After completing this level a student achieves the Reiki Master status. This level empowers one to have the full Reiki energy at one's disposal. A Reiki Master can attune other people to Reiki as well as teach the 3 levels.

This level takes a much longer time to achieve which may be from a few months to over a year. After achieving this level Reiki becomes an integral part of one's life.

There are 2 types of Master Reiki.

  • Master Teacher - One who teaches (attunes) Reiki and practices Reiki (treats with Reiki) as well.
  • Master Practitioner - One who only practices Reiki (treats with Reiki) but does not teach Reiki.

Reiki Benefits

Reiki can heal the physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual aspect of a person. It can treat both acute and chronic disease. However, in the case of terminal illness, Reiki treatment can give peace, relieve pain and offers a better quality of the remaining time.

Reiki improves inner harmony and balance and promotes a feeling of well being, reduces stress and enhances relaxation, makes the immune system strong, increases energy levels, improves blood circulation, cleanses internal organs, speeds up the recovery process after surgery or illness, aids in better sleep.

Reiki can be used to heal simple conditions like injuries, headaches, pains, colds and benefits in the more severe ones like addictions, asthma, AIDS, heart disease and cancer.

Concluding Remarks

In conclusion, it can be said that Reiki therapy can safely be taken by anyone irrespective of age or health condition, a believer in this system or a non-believer from any strata of society. It can also be taken along with any other treatments or medicines being taken.

No special equipment is needed to give or take Reiki therapy. No force or concentration is required on the part of the patient.

Am I glad to hear that, Shaloo? It certainly makes me happy to see you found answers to some of your questions in this hub. Thank you so much for appreciating.

Shaloo Walia from India on February 10, 2016:

Reiki has always intrigued me and this hub provided the answers to many of my questions. Thanks for sharing!

Rajan Singh Jolly (author) from From Mumbai, presently in Jalandhar, INDIA. on June 28, 2015:

mbwalz, thanks for stopping by. I agree these symbols were kept a secret for a long time but like everything the net has made them universally known. However does it make a difference in its efficacy? What's your view?

Rajan Singh Jolly (author) from From Mumbai, presently in Jalandhar, INDIA. on June 28, 2015:

MizBejabbers, It is a 3 level training though some make it 4.

Doris James MizBejabbers from Beautiful South on June 26, 2015:

I was glad to read the comment about the 4 levels because although my training was several years ago, I was certain that I'd had 3 levels of training. Because the symbols got so complicated I never have finished memorizing them for the 3rd level so I can proceed on to my masters level. As a result, I basically practice on second level right now. I wish I'd learned this when I was young and my memory was nearly photographic.

MaryBeth Walz from Maine on January 23, 2015:

This is a good over view of Reiki. I am a level 2 healer. My only concern (and you would not have known) is your inclusion of the video showing the sacred symbols. While they are meaningless to the un-attuned, they were never meant to be made public, but reserved only for those who practice Reiki. But thank you for your intelligent and thoughtful presentation.

Demas W Jasper from Today's America and The World Beyond on December 01, 2014:

Added to my understanding. Thanks for this effort.

Carla on November 03, 2014:

I felt the info on Reiki was well done. I have been a Master for 14+ years and have received many benefits for myself as well as working with clients.

The Reiki symbols r still considered, for traditional Practioners. To be sacred. I'm ways a bit disturbed when I see people freely giving these out. That was not the intention of Dr. Usui nor any of the persons he personally attuned.

swetagrawal on August 25, 2014:

I had taken attune reikibefore 15 years but not practise should I take the attunement again or practise is enough

Rajan Singh Jolly (author) from From Mumbai, presently in Jalandhar, INDIA. on March 20, 2014:

I wish you all the best for this course and hope you complete it successfully. Practice is most important in Reiki. Keep at it Harsha.

Harsha Vardhana R from Bangalore on March 19, 2014:

Thank you, Rajan!

Today, one of my friends called me (after a long time) and informed me about a Reiki Course! I have decided to register and attend and practice sincerely!

15 years ago, I had cleared 2 levels but didn't continue the practice after I got some quick benefits!

May I request you for your blessings for my course and sincere practice!

Regards,

Harsha
