Meaning and Functions of the Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is the fifth energy center and the first of our higher chakras. It resonates with the color blue. The Sanskrit name is Visuddha which means "purification." The throat chakra is associated with self-expression, communication, sound, hearing, and vibration. This is combined with the responsibility to have purposeful thoughts and use wisely chosen words to bring more value to the conversations we have.

Communication is not only a project of speaking and writing. We communicate with our creativity through singing, dancing, painting, drawing, designing, building, performing and photography, to name a few. We communicate with our eyes, sign language, touch, and silence. We communicate through sound therapy, telepathy, and intuitiveness. There is also the vital communication between the brain and the body, the cells and organs, and all the intricate bodily functions that make life possible.

The positive archetype is "The Communicator". Communicators are people of integrity. They speak their truth with honesty, purpose, and clarity. They can express their anger, discontentment, and disagreement without diminishing one another. Communicators are skillful and compassionate when expressing themselves, stand by their beliefs, choose their words wisely, and rarely use vulgar language. They are engaging. They say "yes" when they are able and "no" when it is necessary,

The negative archetype is "The Masked Self" or "The Silent Child" who can be the one laughing and making jokes in order to hide the pain of having his true self suppressed in childhood. This archetype was made to feel like his thoughts and what he had to say were not valued. In adulthood he continues to believe that he will not be listened to or valued so he is unable to express his truth. This archetype will say "Yes" when he wants to say "No", then be filled with anger and resentment that he cannot express and holds inside.

Physical and Emotional Dysfunctions

The throat chakra is associated with the Thyroid and Parathyroid glands. It is also associated with the trachea, neck vertebrae, esophagus and mouth, teeth, and gums. The dysfunction of this chakra can present as one having the inability to articulate their truth and speaking in a monotonous tone that does not capture their audience's interest. They may hold their chin down thereby protecting and blocking the throat chakra. There might be a frequent clearing of the throat as they "swallow their truth". Unexpressed emotions, dishonesty, lies we tell ourselves, inability to follow our dreams, and speaking badly about others behind their backs can block this chakra. The energy flow can be disrupted by all forms of substance abuse such as smoking, alcohol, and recreational drugs. The abuse of substances that alter our consciousness and the ability to connect with our higher selves also disallows us to speak our highest truth.

Throat chakra blockage can manifest in a sore throat, stiff neck, thyroid problems, mouth ulcers, TMJ, scoliosis, and swollen glands.

An overactive throat chakra can make us too talkative, self-righteous, opinionated, and have an exaggerated sense of our own self-importance.
