Seven Healing Crystal Shapes and Their Uses

I have studied crystal healing for many years and have studied and been attuned to reiki levels one, two, and masters.

Crystals can be found in a wide variety of shapes such as clusters, geodes, points, and balls. Some shapes are naturally formed and others, such as crystal balls, are shaped artificially by humans. Each different formation has a selection of properties and uses which are in addition to the properties of the crystal variety. For example, a geode has a cavern-like structure which has the ability to gather and store energy that is then gradually released into the surrounding environment. Taking the different shapes and forms of crystals into consideration can help to enhance or further tailor the outcomes of your healing so that you can receive the best results possible for your situation. Examples of this include using wands to focus healing on a specific area of the body or using crystal clusters to cleanse a room or other crystals.

Crystal Point

Crystal points may have naturally formed or been shaped by hand after being mined. Crystals that have a single point are useful in healing, especially when you want the crystals energy to focus on a small area. Holding the point towards the body draws energy through the crystal and into the body, while holding the point away from the body draws energy out of the body.

Crystal points can be used to send healing to someone over distance or in circumstances where you cannot use the stone directly – for example with small children or animals. You will need a clear photograph of the person and if you wish you can write details such as their name and location on the back. Hold the crystal in your hand and ask that it send healing to the person. Place the crystal on top of the photograph and visualise the crystals energy flowing out of the point and to the person. A clear quartz point is ideal for this use.

Citrine is well known for its ability to attract wealth, success and prosperity. Place your business card on your desk or other place where it will not be disturbed. Ideally this should be in a place associated with the business but this is not essential. Place a citrine point on top of the business card and visualise your goals for the business being achieved.

Double Terminated Crystal

This crystal formation has a clear point at each end and maybe naturally or artificially formed. Double terminated crystals are able to release or absorb energy from both ends at once and are regarded as a stone of balance. The terminations do not have to be identical and in many cases one end will be more pronounced than the other. You may have an instinctive feeling that one end is the top and one the bottom but if not this won’t affect the crystals abilities. Crystals that possess a point at each end are able to draw out energy while also accepting energy flowing inwards. They are a good choice for balancing the chakras or for creating a bridge between two areas such as people, places, chakras or energy points.

A double terminated clear quartz crystal is a useful stone in working to increase psychic abilities, visualisation or lucid dreaming. To do this hold the crystal over your third eye during meditation and focus on its energy flowing in and boosting your abilities while gentle dissolving any negative energy or relevant blockages that are present.

Crystal Clusters

A crystal cluster is made up of many crystal points embedded into a solid base. The crystals can be large, small or a mixture and may grow in several different directions. This collection of points work together to create a unified energy that is excellent for a number of uses.

Clusters are very effective in cleansing rooms and other spaces of negativity while bringing their own beneficial energy in. The specific benefits will be dependent on the crystal type used but a few examples include:

  • blue kyanite crystal to promote honest and open communication
  • purple fluorite for well-being and creating a calm atmosphere
  • place amethyst clusters on meditation altars or hold during meditation to create cantered and calm feelings
  • clear quartz can help bring peace and harmony to wherever it is placed

Clear quartz and amethyst clusters can also be used to cleanse other crystals. To do this, simply place the crystals onto the cluster and leave for at least 24 hours. The cluster will draw out and neutralise the negative energy from the crystals and revitalise the crystal with its energy ready for use again.

A large amyethst geode

A geode is a roughly spherical rock that contains a hollow cavity lined with crystals. They can be found in a range of sizes from tiny right up to large display pieces and are commonly found containing amethyst, clear quartz and citrine. Geodes are excellent at holding and storing energy and smaller crystals can be placed inside them as a method of cleansing.

Inside a geode hundreds and even thousands of crystal points are formed, all pointing and directing energy into the centre. This makes them an excellent aid in manifesting things you would like to come into your life. In order for this exercise to be most effective, you will need to be very clear about what your intention is. Take your time to think this over and consider how your wish should be worded in order to be most clear and specific. Once you are ready, write your intention on to a piece of paper while visualising it coming true. Continue this visualisation and fold the paper towards you as many times as is needed to fit it inside your geode. Place the paper inside the geode and place your hands on either side of the stone (If it is smaller geode you can also hold it in your hands, if preferred). Speak your intention clearly just as it is written and intend that the energy of the crystal be directed towards helping you achieve your goal. Close your eyes and in as much detail as possible visualise your journey towards achieving your goal. See the steps that you must take and their successful outcome, see and feel your happiness and sense of achievement. Repeat this exercise several times a week until your intention has been filled.

Quartz abundance crystals

An abundance crystal consists of one long crystal point that has many smaller points clustered around its base. Just as its name suggests this is an excellent crystal for attracting abundance into your life. It can be used alongside other crystals known to attract abundance or on its own. For example a selection of business success and prosperity crystals could be placed in your office surrounding an abundance stone. This will help to attract new business, wealth and success to your place of work and is a very useful tool for small or new businesses. Abundance crystals are also highly effective when placed in the wealth corner or your home. When taking your whole house into consideration this is the farthest back left corner from your front door. You can also place the crystal in the back left corner of a specific room for a more directed approach: for example in your home office.

An amethyst wand

Crystal Wands

Wands are a traditional healing tool and have the ability to greatly focus their energy through their fine point. This shape of crystal can be found in a wide range of shapes and sizes and in many varieties of crystal. Some are naturally formed while others have been shaped artificially. Wands may be long or short, have a rounded or flat end or be tapered: all are highly beneficial healing stones. The elongated shape of a wand allows it to direct its energy in a focused straight line and means that they are great for getting a concentration on energy into a specific point on the body, such as a chakra. Wands can also be used in conjunction with the body’s pressure points as used in reflexology and acupuncture.

In order to heal a specific area or condition using a wand, you will first need to draw out the negative or harmful energy that is present. To do this, hold the wand over the area with the point facing away from the body, the crystal does not need to be touching the body unless you’re comfortable doing so. If you are carrying out healing on another person the point of the crystal should not be pointing directly at you, as this can cause the energy that is being drawn out to flow into your own aura. In your mind picture the unwanted energy being drawn out of the body, up through the crystal and out of the tip. Once you feel that any negativity has been removed you can replace it will healing energy. To do this, turn the crystal wand around so that the point is touching or directed at the problem area. Visualise the powerful energy of the crystal flowing in to the area and providing the healing that is needed. There is no set time that this should be carried out for as each case is different, just go with whatever feels right at the time.

An amethyst pyramid

Crystal Pryamids

Crystal pyramids are stones that have been shaped to a point, have four equal faceted sides and a flat base. They are useful for manifestation and affirmation work, removing negative energy and healing the chakras. Pyramid shaped crystals can also be used in protection by imagining yourself (or another person) being surrounded by a pyramid shaped energy flowing from within the crystal. Another protection technique is to visualise yourself safe and well within the crystal itself.

To use crystal pyramids in chakra healing you will need a pyramid in the same colour as the affected chakra. It is possible to buy sets of these, one for each of the seven main chakra or individually. Lie in a quiet room and place the pyramid on top of the chakra you wish to heal. Close your eyes and visualise the energy of the crystal flowing into your chakra and swirling through it pushing any blockages and negative energy out to dissipate. Continue this exercise until you feel the energy has been refreshed and any blockage cleared. Now see the energy withdrawn back into the crystal and take a few slow deep breaths in and out before opening your eyes and returning to the room. If you wish to balance or cleanse all seven chakra this can be done in one exercise. Place a pyramid on each chakra and starting at your root work through each chakra in turn cleansing and unblocking the energy present.

Questions & Answers

  • In regards to healing crystals, Is it more important to have the Shape of the stone or better to have the kind of stone such as amethyst and black tourmaline?

I would say it's more important to have the correct stone for your needs than a particular shape. Each shape has individual properties that can help but the main benefits come from the specific energy and properties of the crystals variety. The different formations are certainly useful but I feel that is secondary, almost like a boost.

That sounds lovely and cool. There's no beach where I now live. I believe most of these stones were purchased at local museum years ago.--still in the same boxes too.

I love going to the sea and looking for interesting stones and shells. There is a beach about two hours from us where we always find holey stones. I have a really small one that I wear round my neck.

I agree Claire. It's probably collecting a lo of dust in my bedroom closet. I remember collecting shiny rocks and shells at the New Jersey shore.

I have a lot of my crystals away in boxes too. A lot of people might say I have too many but I think you can never have too many :D No such thing as too many crystals or books.

Thank you. Sorry to hear about your mum but it is great that you have been able to keep her collection. My son really likes geodes too and has a few small ones. He loves rocks, everytime we go to the beach he wants to bring some home.

Claire, this was a great and intuitive article about the many different healing properties from stones and other crystals. My late mother collected geodes and other precious rocks before she died four years ago--I have kept them and displayed some of them in the living room too. I believe I've seen something mentioned about them in feng sui too.
