A Yoga Trainer, Therapist and Research Scholar, delving deep into the world of ancient knowledge.
The first-ever mention of the effects of sound on the human cells is in the Indian Epic Mahabharata. Pregnant Subhadra was attentively listening to her husband Arjun, the Pandava Prince, about the various military formations. However, she fell asleep while he was explaining to her the seventh and the last Padmavyuha and missed the chance to learn it. Their son Abhimanyu was born with all this knowledge except the last one. He was later killed on the thirteenth day of the Kurushetra war as he got trapped in the last Charvyuha.
What Is Sound Bath Therapy?
It is healing process where an individual is exposed to sound frequencies in form of music, nature’s sounds, mantras, instruments sound like bells, Tibetan bowls, or drums to induce a state of complete relaxation. This can be done actively with complete focus on the sound in a comfortable sitting or lying down position. It normally leads to mild trance for some people in which they go into a deep relaxation state with full awareness. Normally there are about 50 thoughts per minute processed by the brain consuming a lot of energy. But when mind is focused, it becomes very calm and relaxed giving complete rest to the body.
Passively one can have sound bath by just listening to such sounds while doing routine works like driving a car or doing household chores. Simply put some mantra chanting or any of the favorite music to destress the mind.
Who Can Do It?
It can be practiced by people of all ages from a baby in a womb to a person on the death bed. In the Indian culture, there is a tradition of Garbh Sanskara where a pregnant woman reads aloud the religious texts and chants mantras to inculcate right values in her unborn child.
People normally chant the MahaMrityunjaya mantra for speedy recovery of the sick people. It is believed that this mantra has great healing power. There are specific mantras to activate various Chakras located on the spine of the human body. Some African tribes use drum beats to go in trance. The frequencies of these sounds have beneficial effects on the body and the mind.
Where Can It Be Done?
It can be done in a place which is clean and peaceful with enough space to lie down or sit comfortably. There should be only the meditating sound in the room. It can be done in a group under the guidance of an instructor or alone in the comfort of own home. There is no rule for the duration of the session which can range from 15 minutes to one hour or more.
While doing it passively, it can be done anywhere. One can do this on the mountain top or the sea beach by just mediating on the sound.
Why Should It be Practised?
Sound bath therapy is chemical-free, cheap, and the best means to heal oneself. According to the Vedic Philosophy, the soul manifests itself in the five-dimensional physical form. This human body is encompassed in five layers of existence.
- Annamaya kosh (layer): It is the gross level of the body which is made up of flesh, bone and blood being nourished by the energy of food.
- Pranamaya kosh: It is the second of the physical body which gets its energy from the Pran or the vital forces which carry out the physiological functions like breathing or heartbeat.
- Manomaya kosh: This third layer of the body is guided by all the five senses of the body. The body perceives the outside world by these sense organs with emotional connect with the mind.
- Vigyanmaya kosh: It is the intellectual aspect of the body that works in coordination with the physical perception to accumulate knowledge.
- Anandamaya kosh: This is the ultimate level where the body experiences extreme bliss either in the state of sleep or superconscious state. This is the original state in which soul exits but this gets altered as it gets immersed into worldly affairs.
Sound bath cleanses all these levels of the body and helps to restore the ultimate bliss. The science of Ayurveda says that the diseases get implanted in the gross body after it is perceived by the higher levels. If a person is emotionally disturbed over a long period of time can manifest itself as peptic ulcer or hair fall or any such diseases.
Sound bath therapy not only heals the damaged cells at the cellular level but also prevents the occurrence of diseases by cleaning the mental, physical, intellectual and emotional aspects of the body. All the negative feelings like ego, anger, stress and jealously are washed away by the sound frequencies.
How Does It Work?
Now there are scientific proof to show that sound greatly affects the physiologically of the body cells. Vestibulocochlear nerves of the ears convert the sound waves into electrical signals that gets decoded by the brain for body to respond.
The state of mind can be altered into delta or theta state by using lower frequency brainwaves. The higher frequencies alter the mind into gamma state which is more focused and concentrated state of consciousness.
Regular meditation and sound bath therapy enhances the alpha brainwaves which has deep relaxing impact on the brain.
528 Hertz frequency is called “Miracle note” as it has capacity to heal DNA of the cells. There are seven such healing sound frequencies which have magical impact on the body. These are 396 Hz, 528 Hz, 639 Hz, 741 Hz, 852 Hz, 963 Hz and 417 Hz Solfeggio Frequencies. When body is subjected to such sound frequencies for certain duration, healing takes place at microscopic level.
Sound therapy bath is not only ecological sustainable (as it saves water) but also power packed easily accessible technique at centre of your earlobes. Do go for it even in the chilling weather to wash away all your negativities from your body and mind.
