Many people struggle with having an overly busy mind. This can make it difficult to concentrate on tasks and remain mindful in everyday life. Often, these constant thoughts are concerns about things we need to get done, money, relationships, job stress, and future or past events. These thoughts can contribute to higher levels of stress and reliving events over and over, neither of which is beneficial to us and our well-being.
Cyclical Thought Patterns and Quartz
Worrying about future events can have a detrimental effect on us in the present but may also have a negative effect on the outcome in the future. It can be easy to get into a pattern of anxious or negative thinking regarding the future, which leads to your mind being filled with thoughts such as ‘I can never be good enough' or ‘things never go right for me’ or to blame your past self for your position now, for example believing you didn’t go to a good enough school or didn’t work hard enough at college. Even if those two statements are true, the past cannot be changed so there is no point in worrying about what you did or didn’t do. The good news is that it is never too late to try again or find an alternative route to where you wish to be in life.
Negative beliefs about ourselves not only create worry and make us feel bad about who we are but can greatly limit what we believe we can achieve in life. They may stop us from working towards our goals, be used as excuses for being in situations or make you feel that there is no way someone like you deserves success, abundance and happiness.
Limiting beliefs come in many forms but some examples include:
- I will be happy when I have …
- It’s too risky
- I don’t deserve …
- I’m not good enough
- My goals can only ever be dreams
- I’m not attractive enough
- I always fail
- I’m never as lucky as other people seem to be
Learning to become mindful of these limiting thoughts and be realistic about them can be a great help in calming our minds and in developing a more positive mindset and outlook on life. At first, this idea may seem overwhelming and impossible (which in itself may become a limiting belief), but you do not have to tackle every thought at once. If a few minutes of taking note of your thoughts is all you feel you can manage right now, that is fine.
One useful exercise when working with limiting beliefs is to ask yourself a few questions related to each one. You can do this when the thoughts surface or spend some time sitting quietly and considering things that you know are holding you back. For each belief spend some time considering:
- Is this thought useful?
- Is it helpful?
- Where did it come from?
- Is it honestly true/still true
In many cases, you may find that these thoughts come from things other people have said to you or led you to believe about yourself. You may also find that the belief may have been true in the past but no longer is. For example, there is no need to feel bad about failing your high school exams when you were 16 if you have now gone on to gain higher qualifications via another route. Despite the past failing you have found a way forward and succeeded anyway.

This variety of quartz gets its name from the needle-like inclusions of rutile within it. These are generally golden in colour but may also be silver, copper or black. Working With Rutilated Quartz
As well as being programmed and carried with you or placed in your home, rutilated quartz is a great choice of crystal for meditation and crystal grids. Keeping the crystals around you will help you benefit from their energies, particularly if they have been programmed with the specific intent of releasing thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve your highest good or are no longer true.
Rutilated quartz can also be used in a grid featuring other crystals that suit your needs. For example, if you are working on issues related to love you may include rose quartz, rhodochrosite or green aventurine. If you would like a more focused and direct method or feel that you would prefer to work privately at the times you choose then you may find that meditating with a piece of rutilated quartz is a better option.
Rutilated Quartz Meditation Exercise
One method of working with this crystal in meditation is in addressing the self-limiting and negative thoughts identified in the earlier exercise. You do not need to work on all of these at once if you feel that this will be too difficult or overwhelming. Take your time and address each issue in turn, based either on when they come to your mind or on how important they feel to you and improving your life. You may also find that certain beliefs may need to be addressed and released before you can begin to work on others. Feel free to use some calming meditation music, nature sounds or similar during this exercise if you wish.
Using Rutilated Quartz in Meditation
Take your time to sit quietly and enter a meditative state. Hold your crystal however feels most comfortable to you: for example in one hand or held at heart centre. You could also wear a crystal as jewellery if you prefer. For anyone who wears a bra, these are a great spot for placing crystals and keeping your hands free. Connect with the energy of the stone and ask that it support you through understanding and releasing thoughts, feelings and beliefs that are no longer true or serve your greatest good. Visualise its energy flowing through and around you creating a calming and safe space.
Focus on the issue that you have chosen and consider where these thoughts/beliefs come from. Where they planted in childhood? Come from a past trauma such as an abusive relationship or accident? If you are not sure why you began thinking in this way that is okay. It can be a difficult thing to identify and often self-limiting beliefs are not formed from one incident, but from many smaller seemingly harmless events or words from others. Think over the times that made you feel this way and the emotions that you felt.
Once you feel ready move on to considering the usefulness of this belief, consider if it brings any good into your life or only serves to hold you back. Do you already feel that it is untrue but struggle to get past it as it is so firmly rooted in your thinking? Was this belief beneficial at a time in life but is no longer so? In the case of thoughts/beliefs about yourself, it is important to think about whether they are actually true or if they have been planted in your mind by experiences and treatment from others.
Releasing Your Belief
The final step of this meditation is releasing the belief. Keeping in mind the previous stages focus on whether this thought/belief is useful to you and true. Be as honest as you can and remember that although something may have been true at one time, it may no longer be so. Take as long as you need, stopping to refocus on visualising the crystals energy if needed. When you feel ready to release the issue you have been working on and see it carried away by the energy of your rutilated quartz. Sit quietly for a few moments before gently bringing your awareness back to the room around you.
Creating a Grid with Rutilated Quartz
Grids are a useful and practical way to work with crystals, especially if you want to work with their energy over a period of time. They can be as large or as small as you wish and feature one type of crystal or many. You do not need any special equipment to work with crystal grids though many people do like to use a printed grid to help them lay out the crystals. It is also possible to buy wooden or stone crystal grids if you wish. Bought or printable grids are often in the patterns of the Flower of Life or Metatron’s cube but these layouts are not compulsory.
A crystal grid is a geometric pattern of crystals that have been charged with specific intent. Before creating a grid it is important to have a clear idea of what your intention for it is. This not only allows you to choose the best crystals to use but will ensure that the energy produced by the grid is clear and focused on your need. An unclear intent can lead to muddled or muted results that may leave you feeling disappointed or that you aren’t skilled enough to work with crystals. A Hexagonal crystal grid is a simple layout to get started with and requires seven crystals which are placed in the centre and at each point of the hexagon. If you wish you can print out a hexagon shape (such as this one) to use as a guide or you can place the crystals without one. If you do decide to use a template you may wish to decorate it, for example by adding symbols or words that relate to your intention for the grid. The crystals that you wish to use will need to be cleaned before use.
Choosing Crystals for Your Grid
To set up your crystal grid you will need a rutilated quartz crystal to place in the centre and six further stones. These can be raw or tumbled stones or a combination of both. You can use all rutilated quartz crystals or incorporate others than correspond to your need. The stones used will depend on the thought or belief that you are working on releasing. Some examples of possible crystals include:
- For love related issues (including self-love): rose quartz, green aventurine, rhodochrosite or fuchsite
- For building confidence: carnelian, citrine, hematite, rhodonite or red tiger’s eye
- Working towards goals: Tiger’s eye, green aventurine or carnelian
- Cord-cutting (from people or past events): Botswana agate, sunstone or selenite
It is up to you which crystals you chose and you may feel drawn to use a particular stone or stones. Some people believe that using to many different stones in a grid can confuse the energy and so should be avoided. Another common thought on building grids is that they should be balanced, so if rose quartz is used on one side another should be used the opposite. Think carefully about the properties of each stone you wish to include and how these will work together. It is okay to let your intuition guide you on creating your perfect grid—it is individual, just like you. It is also completely fine to use only rutilated quartz crystals if you prefer.
Setting up your Healing Crystal Grid
You will need to find a spot for your grid where it will not be disturbed by others or accidentally knocked over. It is helpful if this is somewhere that you will see it as this will serve to remind you of your intention. Lay your template (if using) on a stable firm surface and place your crystals beside it. Sit quietly and focus on the belief or thought that you wish to work with. Pick up the crystal you will be placing in the grid centre and ask that it support you through letting go of this as it no longer serves your highest purpose and holds you back in life.
Energy Visualization In the Grid
Visualise the energy of the crystals surrounding you in a soothing white light before placing the stone in the centre of your hexagon. Repeat this process with each of the crystals in turn. If you have chosen a selection of stones you can slightly alter your thoughts to fit each if you feel it beneficial. Once the grid is complete spend some time focusing on your intent and visualising your desired outcome. This can be purely in your thoughts or you may like to speak in your mind or even out loud. When you feel ready gently bring your awareness back to the room and you are free to continue with your day.
