Working With Chakras in Crystal Healing
Placing crystals directly on or around the chakras can help to rebalance internal energies and lead to healing and an improvement in our well-being. The chakras are able to draw in beneficial energies from the crystal and then transport this throughout the body via the body’s energy pathways, also known as meridians and out into the aura.
Each type of crystal has its own unique energy that can be used in order to heal and bring balance and peace to people, animals and the environment we live in. They can be used to bring about valuable changes in mind, body, spirit and emotions using a number of techniques.
- Wearing crystals in jewellery
- Carrying crystals with you
- Crystals elixirs
- Holding or rotating crystals over a point of pain or illness
- Releasing blockages in the chakras
There are seven major chakras in the body which are known as the crown, brow, throat, heart, solar plexus, sacral and root chakras. Chakras draw in whatever energy they encounter, process it and then pass it back out into the body and aura. This can bring good things such as healings and enhancements to our energy levels, creativity or motivation to us and our lives. Unfortunately negativity and harmful energies that maybe present around us can also be drawn in and have the opposite effect on us. This can cause disruption to the chakras and energy system in the body which can manifest itself as illness and disease, unhappiness or feelings or discontent, anxiety, depression or anger. These energies can come from the people around us, our physical surroundings and the lifestyle that we lead.
The chakras are often described as spinning wheels of energy and the word ‘chakra’ comes from the Sanskrit chakram which means circle or wheel.
Only naturally occurring crystals can be used in healing. Although beautiful, man-made crystals such as Austrian and lead crystals lack the vibrational qualities that mean they are able to interact with and benefit us. Many types of crystal are formed in the earth’s surface or underground; some are created through sedimentation and built up of many tiny layers. Crystal such as tektite and moldavite are believed to be of extra-terrestrial origin either as meteorites or due to reactions in the earth when a meteorite crashes.
Although science still struggles to fully explain the power of crystals, humans have long been aware that they held the power to focus, transmit, transform and store energy. Crystal healing can also be used with pets, either directly or by placing crystals in their beds or cages. For cats and dogs small crystal charms can also be attached to their collars.
Working with Crystals
Selecting the crystals that you work with can be done in several ways. Many people like to choose the stones that they feel drawn to but they can also be chosen through using a book detailing their healing properties. Visualisation and meditation can also be used to ask for help in selecting the correct crystals. If during the selection process you are shown or feel a connection to a particular colour rather than a crystal type this can also be used to help you. Research crystals of that colour and check their healing properties until you find one that suits your needs.
All crystals that are used in healing should be cleansed (also known as clearing) regularly to remove any build-up of negative and stale energy and to enable the crystal to work to its maximum potential. This can be performed in many ways including holding the stones under running water, placing them in the moonlight overnight, smudging or by burying it in the earth.
One simple way of working with crystals is to carry them with you. This can be in a pocket or bag or if you prefer jewellery that incorporates crystals can also be worn. Do not forget that this will be need to cleansed in the same way that crystals do in order to be most effective. In some cases simply holding a crystal for a few minutes can allow you to benefit from its powers and so if you are using crystal healing for a recurring issue it can be very beneficial to have them close to hand at all times.
Jewellery and other accessories can be very useful in working with the chakras. For example a necklace or choker can be worn to help with any imbalances or issues relating to the throat chakra. Blue stones such as lapis lazuli, blue lace agate and angelite are often used with the throat chakra. A longer necklace could also be worn so that crystals can be worn close to the heart chakra. Green or pink stones such as rose quartz, Rhodochrosite, Peridot and aventurine can be used to benefit the heart chakra. Similarity a belt buckle that features a relevant crystal can be worn to aid or heal the sacral chakra. Traditionally turquoise has been used in this way as it is a valuable all round healer for physical ailments and its energy can easily be taken into the sacral chakra and transported throughout the body.
A second method of using crystals to work with the chakra is to lay them directly on the area of the chakra you are working with. For example if you are suffering with any digestive disorders then placing a crystal over the solar plexus chakra can help. Crystals such as citrine, amber and tiger’s eye would be good choices for this type of healing. Lay comfortably somewhere you will not be disturbed and place the crystal over your solar plexus chakra for five minutes.
It is also possible to carry out a whole body/chakra system balancing and healing by placing an appropriate crystal on each of the chakras at the same time.
Crystals and their Corresponding Chakras
Some examples of crystals and the chakras they can benefit are:
Base chakra – red jasper, hematite, black obsidian, smoky quartz, bloodstone, black tourmaline, snowflake obsidian, jet, opal and mookaite.
Sacral chakra – carnelian, moonstone, pearl, blue jasper, topaz, orange calcite and citrine.
Solar plexus chakra – citrine, ametrine, amber, tiger’s eye, yellow jasper, golden beryl and malachite.
Heart chakra – malachite, aventurine, rose quartz, garnet, chrysocolla, jade, Rhodochrosite, ruby and green quartz.
Throat chakra – blue lace agate, turquoise, kyanite, azurite, amethyst, aquamarine and kunzite.
Brow chakra – sodalite, Herkimer diamond, garnet, sapphire, lapis lazuli, moldavite and tanzanite.
Crown chakra – amethyst, Sugilite, selenite, howlite, moldavite, quartz, and citrine.
All healing should be carried out in a clean, calm and cleansed area. Cleansing can be carried out using a smudging stick of herbs or incense sticks. This should be lit and the flame blown out so it smoulders. The smoke should then be directed around the room and special attention should be paid to the corners as energy can get stuck here and become stale.
The space should be warm and comfortable as you will need to sit or lay down for the duration of the healing. Relaxing music, candles and calming essential oils can also be used if wished.
Once you have chosen which crystals you are going to use they should be cleansed before use. Lie comfortably and relax. Your chosen crystal or crystals should be placed onto their corresponding chakra; this does not have to be exactly positioned in order to be effective. Relax in this position for 20-30 minutes before removing the crystals. If desired you can also visualise your chakra become healed and balanced and any negative symptoms dissipating.
