The Best Sage to Use for Energy Cleansing

Sage, also known as Salvia, has more than 900 species. White sage, which has been used by shamans and ancient civilizations since the dawn of human culture, is one of the most well-known species because of the strong belief in its ability to effectively clear negative energy. White sage is used by burning the dried leaves, usually in the form of sage sticks (smudge sticks), which are bundled leaves wrapped with string. The smoke of white sage is believed to repel the negative, static energies from your energy body and personal space. In modern times, we use white sage to clear our homes, cars, and holy altars for doing spiritual work.

How to Make Your Own Smudge Sticks

How to Create a Smudge Stick

You will need the following supplies: dried white sage leaves and cotton string.

  1. Bundle your leaves together and tie a knot around the bottom of your bundle of white sage leaves.
  2. Begin to wrap the string around the leaves tightly but spaced. Wrap it only enough to keep all the leaves wound inside your bundle making sure you won't lose any smaller leaves.
  3. Tie another knot close to the top of your bundle.

The finished smudge stick should be firm and tight and ready for use.

Preparing to Use Your Smudge Stick

The intention of using a white sage smudge stick is to simply cleanse and clear yourself and your surrounding of the static, negative, toxic energies. So before you light the end of that sage, there are some things you should do before you go waving the pungent smoke around.

You first want to be safe and physically clean:

Be sure to have a bowl to collect the ashes. Working with fire always has its hazards so be sure to use general fire safety and have a bowl to collect any ashes and also to be able to put out the embers when you are finished with your smudge clearing.

Being physically clean is also important. By cleaning your body and your home, car, or any other space you want to clear of negative energies, you are mentally and physically preparing yourself to begin getting rid of unwanted dense, negative energy. Even if you are just wanting to clear your home of negative energies, I suggest you start with your own body first because you will be the one clearing the energy. You and the white sage work together. You are mentally clearing the energy and the white sage smudge stick is assisting you in that process. So, first start by bathing your body in a bath or shower. It's always good to smudge yourself first before doing any clearing of your home or other spaces.

How to Clean Your Home of Any Negative Energy

Notes for physically cleansing your space or new home:

If you have recently moved into a new home or just feel there is a very negative feel or mustiness to the space, I suggest a deep cleaning. All windows, floors, and dark corners should be given special attention. Clear all cobwebs, dust, and stale stagnant energy from your space. If there are wood cabinets and floors, you can use a mild witch hazel diluted with water of 10 parts water to 1 part witch hazel to help cleanse and free the space of any negative energies firmly attached to its surfaces.

Using essential oils and natural sea salt for an extra boost:

Essential oils such as lemon, sage, and pine can add a nice smell but also have their own properties for bringing in new energy and life; sage essential oil has a purifying effect. Lemon essential oil will bring in new vibrancy and energy, and it doesn't hurt that citrus has a fresh scent while pine essential oil (which is a commonly used floor and house cleaner) is known to bring prosperity.

Natural sea salt is grounding and purifying. Use natural sea salt to sprinkle on your carpets before vacuuming. Make sure to leave the salt for an hour or so to allow it to absorb the negative energy. Make sure to vacuum thoroughly and get rid of any salt that was used for clearing. Sea salt can also be sprinkled at doorways to ground and prevent negative energies from entering your home, helping you keep a positive and clean home all year round.

Cleansing Ritual and Prayer

Before you begin using your sage smudge sticks to clear yourself and then your space, you should first take the time to gather your intentions. I always feel writing or just speaking aloud your own cleansing prayer that you can recite when doing your clearings both helps mentally prepare you for your clearing while also adding positive energy and power to your work. In my personal opinion, you should never do this when you are very tired or feel like it is a chore when clearing your energy space. It should feel uplifting and happy. Adding some nice soothing meditation music can also enhance this experience. The beats and soft vibrations of the music will assist you while cleaning and clearing. Do anything you like to help raise your own vibrations to a higher level.

Example Cleansing Ritual Prayer

"I ask that only Pure White Light surround me now as I intend to clear myself and my space purifying me of all negative static energy surrounding me. Stay with me now and cleanse and banish all blocked and unwanted negative feelings and energy that surround me now."

Sage your self first thoroughly beginning above your head and working down your body paying special attention to your armpits and where your lymph nodes collect and hold toxins. Then as you walk through your space say:

"I cleanse and purify this space banishing all negative and blocked energies."

As you leave the room say:

"This room is now clean may the white light fill this space and protect it."

I want to thank you for pointing me in the direction of proper sage to use for smudging. I have been contemplating growing the sacred sage for personal use and I understand it is getting harder to find which may make it a great opportunity for a small produce business. I save all the stems from my other herbs after I clear the leaves from them. These are my smudges at this time. I do not use them for cleansing, however, I burn them to send their essence back to the Earth properly. They go on my coals or in my fire pit. Excellent directions on how to use sage and I will be reading more of your writings as I have a very large collection of gemstones to work with! (shared!)

Your excitement is contagious! I'm excited knowing that I've helped. Even If I just help one is enough for me because now the light is shining in you as well and you can shine your own light on others. Enlightening others who want to grow and learn. I'm so happy you shared that moment with me and others reading this. Maybe they will learn from your experiences.

I am like a kid - all excited. Got my Smudge Kit today. White sage

already bundled, a nacre shell and sweet grass. Must study up some

before I actually start to smudge. I like your cleansing prayer.

I told the lady at the store that you had mentioned that it would be wise to smudge the crystals in the home. She said, "I'm so glad that you mentioned that as I have never thought to smudge them."

We learn, we share, we grow. This is exciting!

Yes I haven't seen any hubs on that. That would be a good one to do. Clockwise and counterclockwise and their meanings.

I'm working on a different hub right now- Clockwise vs Counterclockwise movement in ritual settings, but maybe later in the month I'll do something about my experiences with sage. :D

I've been using white sage for over 20 years now to cleanse and purify my self, various ritual items (including stones) and any space in which I do ritual or sacred work. The aroma alone brings me into a contemplative place of peace. I'll sometimes combine it with lavender and/or cedar as well for their added properties of blessing and cleansing.

You will love having sage on your own land. I don't know if it would grow where you are, but it won't hurt to try. Just make sure you get the wild sage, or desert sage. Here is a link to the sage that grows where I live:

Wow that sounds wonderful. I wish I had sage growing all over. I should plant some. I have lots of land to grow it on.

You are welcome, Maurice. Where I live there is desert sage growing in abundance. Right behind my home is a little mountain where I gather sage. After a rain, the sage fragrance is heavenly. I order white sage from a Trading Post in South Dakota. I like making my own smudge wands.

I enjoyed reading your excellent hub on white sage. I use this myself for clearing negative energy, along with lemon essential oil for a refreshing and uplifting scent in my home. Thank you for writing this very useful hub.
