10 Ways to Get Rid of a Headache

So you have a headache and are looking for ways to get rid of it? Great, me too! That's why I decided to write this article. I have a horrible headache and I need to find new and creative ways to get rid of it. Yes, I can reach for an excedrin or advil, but I just took some yesterday and I really don't want to be popping a pill every time my head hurts. So here are some ways you can kiss your headache goodbye without having to use analgesics.

Drink water

Headaches are also a way our body is telling us that we are dehydrated. If you
don't drink enough water, your headaches (and maybe other parts of your body)
will start hurting. Drink plenty of water and reduce your caffeine intake.

Listen to Music

Stress is of the main sources of headaches. One way of reducing your headaches
is by reducing your stress, and music just so happens to be a perfect way to
reduce the stress that is clinging to your life.


How to identify headaches

Sinus headache
The pain is located behind the eyebrow bone and/or behind cheekbones

Cluster headaches
The pain is concentrated in and around one eye.

Tension headaches
Feels like a tight band around your head.

Causes intense, pulsating pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and visual changes.

Honey and apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is good for a bunch of things, even for headaches. Dissolve 2 or 3 tsps. of apple cider vinegar and a little bit of honey in a cup of warm water. Drink up!

Try different teas

Some teas can really relax your mind and help you get rid of tension headaches.

You can either smell lavender essential oil or drink lavender tea. Lavender has
a calming and relaxing effect on mind and body.

Many headaches come as a consequence of a blood flow change to the brain. Mint
helps your body regulate that blood flow, which helps control and relieve

Much as with lavender, you can either smell mint or drink it as a tea, and if
you're running short on time, you can simply grab a couple of mint leaves and
chew on them.

Another delicious way of adding mint to your diet is by infusing your drinking
water with it. Simply add organic mint leaves to your water bottle and let it
seep. You can even add lemons to enhance the flavor. This method will increase
your water intake and help your body regulate its blood flow.

Passion flower tea
I use passionflower tea at least every month because of my menstrual cramps.
It works wonders!

Passionflower is a muscle relaxer, and it is usually used to treat insomnia and
anxiety. However, because passionflower has a relaxing effect on the nervous
system, it helps control stress and tension, which can lead to fewer and less
intense headaches.

Valerian root tea
Valerian root tea is commonly used to soothe anxiety, relax the muscles andcure insomnia, which makes it the perfect tea to relieve tension headaches. It is actually one of the more powerful teas that I have tried.

You can add valerian root to a warm, relaxing bath and relax your mind.

Instead of reaching for that aspirin, drink a lemongrass tea. Lemongrass is
rich in eugenol, which is a compound with analgesic and anesthetic properties.
In other words, it can have the same analgesic effect as that Advil you're
about to take without all the added harmful chemicals.

Ginger tea
Ginger possess anti-inflammatory and analgesis properties, which help fight headaches and other body aches.

Peel some ginger and let it boil in water. Drink it as soon as you feel the first pains of headache. The more bitter the tea, the better.

You can also smell ginger essential oil, or massage your temples with it.


When you should get your headaches checked

Go see doctor if:

  • You usually don't get headaches, but lately you have been getting them very often.
  • Your headaches are getting gradually worse
  • You have a fever along with your headache
  • you find yourself getting weaker because of your headaches
  • You start noticing more sensitivity or difficulty seeing (blurry vision, black dots...)

Olive oil

Olive oil contain oleocanthal, which is a powerful antioxidant that has the
potential to relieve headaches. Take 2 teaspoons of olive oil and let the pain
melt away.
*I know olive oil can be really thick to swallow. Add a few drops of lemon
juice and place the olive oil in a tequila shot glass. Mix together and bottoms
up! You will barely feel the oil going down your throat.

Soak your feet

According to grandma, feet are associated with the head, so by extension healing the feet heals the head.

  • Soak your feet in warm water
  • Add a teaspoon of mustard and two handfuls of salt to make the remedy more effective.

*Adding cold compresses on your forehead while soaking your feet can also speed up the remedy.

Potatoes and cucumber

  • Cut up slices of either potatoes or cucumbers and place them on your forehead.
  • Lay down in a dark room and let the stress melt away.

Cinnamon paste

  • Mix 1 tsp. of powder cinnamon with a little bit of water until you form a paste.
  • Apply this paste to your forehead and temples.
  • Lay down for 30 minutes.

Know which places to massage

Between your thumb and index finger

  • Massage the web between your thumb and index finger and locate the muscle.
  • Massage the muscle while applying pressure. Apply as much pressure as you can
  • stand.
  • Do this for 45 to 60 seconds
  • Repeat on the other hand.

Side of your head

  • Lay down facing up in a dark room
  • Place your palms on the sides of your head
  • Slowly slide your palms toward the back of your head, while applying pressure
  • to the areas where the pain is concentrated.

On your forehead
With both your thumbs, apply deep pressure to the middle of your forehead for
several seconds.

If you absolutely have to...

I try to stay away from pills as much as possible, but sometimes you just have to have relief and you need to have it quickly! To speed up the effect of common analgesics take them with coffee, and you will see how quickly your headache leaves you alone.

It's always better to heal yourself with natural remedies, but sometimes you need to have a little help from pills.

My daughter gets terrible headaches all the time. Over the counter medicines makes her stomach hurt. Instead of taking pills, she rubs on heated medication for shoulder and back pain on top of her head. It really works for her. Whatever you do, don't get it in your eyes!

Great ideas. I like the idea of yogurt or putting cucumber or potato slices on the head or soaking the feet. I will try some of these with my next headache. Thanks for sharing.

Great tips! I also use pressure points to relieve headaches. A good one is to apply pressure with your thumb on the inner aspect of your eyebrow as hard as you can stand it. Sounds kooky, I know, but it works!

When I was younger, I made the mistake of saying, "I don't get headaches!" Unfortunately, that was the beginning of them! Now, I get stress headaches most often. Sometimes, if I haven't been careful, my sinuses will inflame as well. Now, when I get a headache, I start asking myself the questions listed here, "Am I drinking enough water?" "Am I eating enough fiber?" "Am I stressed?" and finally, "Am I getting enough rest?" Invariably, there is something I can do differently, and the headache subsides.

I may have these advice handy in time for summer, where I'm most susceptible to headaches and migraines. Didn't know that calcium and magnesium could minimize and get rid of headaches. Thank you for sharing, that's been so kind of you. :)
