Cold and Flu Home Remedies
While working around a bunch of five-year-olds is a fun experience, it also tends to get a bit germy, especially during cold and flu season. As most may know, kids spread germs quite easily because they don’t yet fully understand proper hygiene so, I find myself getting sick quite often.
On the bright side, I think my immune system has gotten a bit stronger from the constant sneezing and coughing because I usually don’t have much more than the sniffles or a sore throat. With these experiences, I’ve discovered some home remedies that help make me feel better. While I may not know the exact science behind these remedies, I hope that this article will help someone who’s not feeling their best. Also, it’s always a good reminder to try to keep everything clean and sanitized. I like to use Clorox wipes on everything, especially my phone after an especially germy day at work.
A Cup of Tea for a Cold
I love drinking a good tea when I'm relaxing, but I find that I turn to them most when I'm not feeling all that well. Just like soup, tea can keep you hydrated, warm, it tastes great, and there are so many combinations you could try. Tea is also a great way to add vitamin C and antioxidants into your beverage to alleviate your symptoms. So, in case you're not in the mood for chicken soup, here are my top three favorite teas and variations for when I'm feeling sick.
Lemon, Honey, and Cinnamon (or Ginger or Turmeric)
I tend to have lemon or lime in the kitchen at all times simply because it goes well with everything and it helps when you’re not feeling well. My favorite combination is lemon, honey, and cinnamon. I like to boil a few cut-up lemons with pieces of cinnamon sticks (ground cinnamon works just as well) in water for a few minutes and then I add honey to taste.
Lemon/lime, honey, and pretty much any other spice like ginger or turmeric can be added to make the tea high in vitamin C and extra soothing for common cold symptoms.
Mint or Eucalyptus
I like to boil the mint leaves in water for a few minutes and I like the taste enough to not add anything else. For those that like a sweeter tea, you can most certainly add honey. The same goes for eucalyptus tea and I usually find these as dried leaves in the spice section of the grocery store. Aside from its cold-healing properties, I find that mint tea is really good for digestion. I’ve also used peppermint and eucalyptus oils in place of Vick’s or Vapor Rub, and they pretty much have the same effect in clearing my nasal passages, congestion, and cough. Additionally, I like to make large batches to add to my bath, which is extremely relaxing and healing overall.
Milk and Turmeric
This is a very popular tea among many and also very beneficial. I mostly like making turmeric face masks or adding turmeric to my dishes, but the combination seems to boost the immune system to fight against the cold and flu virus. From my research, turmeric seems to have anti-inflammatory properties, aids in sleep, and clears the skin. Also, if you're lactose intolerant, you can use almond, coconut, or any lactose-free milk. The key ingredient in this tea is the turmeric.
- Hot chocolate: Any warm drink seems to help and my favorite is hot chocolate. Probably not the healthiest, but certainly the tastiest in my opinion!
- Warm Salt Water: Mixing a few spoonfuls of salt in warm water and gargling it helps to relieve a sore throat but it’s a temporary fix. I try it a few times though, and it seems to do the trick.
- Onion: Now this one I’ve only tried once and I can’t remember if it worked or not because I ended up with a bit of a headache. The trick is to cut an onion and keep one half at your bedside when you sleep. It’s supposed to alleviate a stuffy nose, but maybe I was too sensitive to the smell. If anyone is willing to try this out to see if it works, please let me know in the comments!
- Rest and Relax: Lastly, one of the most important things to do when you’re fighting off a cold is to stay warm and if needed, take the day off. Rest and relaxation may help in making you feel so much better. I know that missing a day off work sometimes seems like a terrible thing and you may not be able to fully relax, but it takes some of the pressure off of your body when you do. It’s okay to take a sick day, and just remember your health comes first! Also, if your symptoms get any worse, always remember to pay a visit to your doctor.
