Fungal toenail formulas can cost an excessive amount of money, sometimes more than $180 for a dermatological prescription. Often, these formulas do not fully cure the problem; once you finish the formula, the fungus resurfaces, and you must pay for another prescription. Ouch. This cycle goes on endlessly, never truly cures your fungal nail ailment, and you end up spending an exorbitant amount of money needlessly.
Getting rid of nail fungus is not an easy task. It usually keeps coming back and doesn't heal properly. The fungus feeds on the keratin that makes up the surface of the toenail. When you apply nail polish on your nails, your nail bed stifles, and this creates a breeding condition for nail fungal growth.
The fungus also thrives in dark, moist environments. Public showers and closed shoes are prime culprits in helping fungi bloom. It is necessary to keep your feet clean and dry.
Use antibacterial soap and wear cotton or wool socks to help absorb moisture from sweaty feet. Your shoes should allow your feet to breathe, and you should expose your feet to sunlight often. Sandals or slippers are ideal to wear when you are trying to heal this type of infection.
Toenail Hygiene Is the Key to Curing Fungal Nail Infections
The trick is keeping your toenails clean, short and dry and don't ever use another individual's toenail clipper or personal hygiene products or wear someone else's shoes. Clean your hygiene tools before using them. Clip your toe nails and file them ultra thin. You may apply a prescription medication that is costly and has side effects, or you could make your own holistic home remedy.
I created this home recipe that works extremely well. It doesn't need refrigeration and will not spoil for six months. This home recipe works nicely; however, you must diligently apply a coat to your clean, ultra-filed toenails at least three times a day, until the condition clears up.
I've Used This Toenail Anti-fungal Formula, and It Worked for Me
Combine the following in an opaque dropper bottle:
- 3 ounces of Cold Pressed, Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
- 3 ounces of Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
- About 35 drops of Oil of Oregano Essential Oil
The combination of olive oil, apple cider vinegar, and oregano oil helps to kill the fungi and heal your toenail. You can increase the potency of this nail formula by adding 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder to this concoction. You must rub this formula into your toenails twice a day, after you clean and dry your feet for optimal results. At night place a bandage on your toenails to keep the product in place, hence, it won't totally go over your sheets. In the morning wash your feet and repeat the procedure.
Remember: Olive oil naturally kills toenail fungus, and so does apple cider vinegar. But if you've had your nail fungus for a long time, you'll need to do more to get rid of the unsightly critters.
Keep Toenails Short and Filed
As your toenail is healing, keep your nail remarkably short and filed flat. Expose your nail to as much fresh air and sunlight as possible. Purchase new shoes often and alternate your shoes on a daily basis. Old shoes normally harbor fungi, and bacteria remains and makes re-infection highly probable.
Are Your Nails Orange?
For those of you who hate seeing your toenails and skin turn orange from the extra turmeric, you can clean your toenails with alcohol before you use my formula.
If your skin starts to itch, a bit of Gold Seal Bond will do the trick. After that, you can dab a bit of Puremedy Fungus Relief on your nails and apply a bandage to keep the product in place at night, before going to bed.
Puremedy Fungus Relief is a homeopathic ointment that is made of beeswax, neem, oregano oil, tea tree oil, Canadian fir balsam along with marigold, echinacea, and elderberry. It works great in killing the fungus. You must use it at least twice a day after you've cleaned and dried your toenails. Keep at it every day for a year or more to get rid of your infected nails. I know it's time-consuming, and you must cut out the fungal part every week, but it is worth it.
Beware of Nail Salons
Nail salons are the leading culprit in spreading toenail fungus. Many do not meet health codes, and they’re often cited for uncleanliness. If you must have a professional pedicure, insist on making sure your nail technician does sterilize the instruments. Or, you may bring your own clean nail tools that are free of fungal bacteria. You can boil your nail scissors in boiling water to sterilize them or soak them in rubbing alcohol.
Use Clean Nail Instruments
Ask a salon employee to cleanse and disinfect the basin before you place your feet into it when washing your feet. Bring your personal new Emery boards, nail scissors, and nail polish, to lessen your chances of getting a hard to get rid of toenail fungus.
To keep your nails healthy, make sure the nail polish you use is water based without formaldehyde, toluene or phthalates. These chemicals are known to disrupt organ function and cause cancer.
It’s best not to polish your nails when you have a toenail fungus, because this suffocates your nails and causes a breeding ground for more fungal growth.
Eat to Kill Toe Nail Fungus
Once you get a toe nail fungus it might take an unusually long time to get rid of it. It could horribly take more than a year to fully heal because your nail must totally grow back. You must be diligent and mindful of your toenails.
You will need to cut back on your consumption of sugar and simple carbohydrates because sugar weakens your immune system and feeds the fungi. Make sure you eat a substantial amount of cultured products containing “friendly” bacteria.
This lactobacillus helps to inhibit the growth of fungus under and around the nail bed. Eliminate foods from your diet that tend to promote secretion of mucus like pasteurized dairy and meat products.
- Avoid soda drinks, processed foods, and fatty or fried foods.
- Eat heaps of garlic because it helps to neutralize most fungi.
Zap Nail Fungus with Extra Nutrition
- I have used Whole food supplementation (an inexpensive way) to heal my toenail fungus. I've bridged the gap between what you should eat and actually do eat, every day. Your nails, hair, and skin will seem healthier too, besides the added bonus of having your energy skyrocket.
When the fungus is not wholly irradiated, it can travel into your bloodstream and cause severe fungal infection of the internal surfaces of the colon and produce jock itch, or vaginal infections including cancer.
Recent studies have proven that cancer is a fungus! People who have fungal infections in one area often have fungal infections in other areas.

Questions & Answers
Question: If you eat garlic to cure toenail fungus, would you also cause abnormal sweating of toes, causing the function to grow even more?
Answer: Eating garlic helps to cure toenail fungus. But one must be diligent in keeping the toenails clean and dry.
I have practically eliminated sugar from my diet and worn sandals for the past two years. My nails are growing healthy but I have also 3x a day dressed my toenails with the nail fungus formula in this article.

I caught a toenail fungus while having a pedicure at a salon. I tried an expensive nail prescription that did not work. Then I began applying either tea tree oil, oregano or cinnamon essential oils with olive oil or coconut oil to my nails. They all worked fine, except the cinnamon oil burned my skin. My nail fungus is going away. I have to wait for my nail to completely grow out for a complete cure. Even then, I will continue to use the essential oils for another year to make sure I don’t have another episode.

I received a simple nail fungus at a salon. It did go away completely with the solution I concocted through the Holistic Foundation for health.

Is your nail fungus gone completely using your home recipe?
If so how long did it take to go away?
Please describe what kind of nail fungus you had.
I need to know if it's anything like mine...
Sheila Craan (author) from Florida on May 26, 2012:
Yes, the essential oil of oregano will be effective. However, you must mix the oil with a carrier oil such as olive oil, or else it will be too strong. You can also eat a lot of oreganos and mustard for nail health.
Angel on May 24, 2012:
Craan, thanks for the reply, I have not tried the solution yet but I was thinking of just using the oil of Oregano essential oil by itself only, will it be effective?
Sheila Craan (author) from Florida on May 24, 2012:
Yes Angel 41, This is a good idea to make sure your feet are dry, because you don't want to create extra moisture.
angel on May 22, 2012:
Hi! Craan is it beneficial to dry your feet with blow dryer after washing them then applying your solution (the 2 oils and Bragg's apple cidar vinegar) to the toe nails?
Sheila Craan (author) from Florida on May 02, 2011:
Sorry you got infected Charlene!
Remember to clean and cut your toe nails before applying the oregano oil mixture. Extra virgin coconut oil works very nicely as well in removing nail fungus. The procedure is the same, cut off the part of your nail that is infected, then apply the extra virgin coconut oil twice or three times a day. Good Luck! It may take more than eight months to clear your nail fungus, therefore don't give up too soon.

Hi Polly this subject is pretty personal for me and I got infected with fungus on my big toe from a salon that did not sterilize the equipment properly. It's better now but not completely gone away. I used the apple cider but I didn't try the oregano oil, I am going to add that to the mix and see if that helps. Thanks a lot.
Sheila Craan (author) from Florida on November 10, 2010:
Thank you Polly! The combination of oregano essential oil, Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar and extra virgin olive oil works very well. You have to remember to apply it to your nail at least twice a day.

Wow I can remember this one, that is usually what I eat in my salad, lol. I had a friend of a friend have to have her toenails on the big toe taken off! Now she just paints the skin to make it look like a toenail. I will bookmark this, I use to keep a notebook, I should still or a folder online in case anyone needs this. I go for natural. I will vote this one up and useful for sure and you are at a great chance to hit the top. Good luck. Great hub. Polly
