How to Combat Heartburn and Acid-Reflux Naturally

Shauna believes that we can all take steps to bring ourselves and the environment back to good health using items you have in your pantry.

It starts as a grumbling rumble. You know what’s coming. You think if you work up some saliva and spit it out you can avoid the inevitable. Then, the rumble stretches, rapidly inching its way upwards, pounding your innards, burning fire along the way until it leaves a bad taste in your mouth and cramps in your stomach.

Do you know this monster? When is it most likely to pay a visit? After a meal? Or does it wait until you’re lying peacefully in bed to knock rudely just beneath your breastbone?

Until recently, I only experienced heartburn at the tail end of my pregnancy when my unborn babe was pressing on my internal organs. Now, it seems that unborn babe has returned in the form of weight gain, and it’s messing with me, but only at night when I’m in a horizontal position seeking comfort and pleasant dreams. Why is that?

Well, first let’s take a look at the definitions of heartburn and acid-reflux. According to the Medical Dictionary section of The Free Dictionary by Farlex, heartburn is defined as follows:

“Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest that can extend to the neck, throat, and face; it is worsened by bending or lying down. It is the primary symptom of gastroesophageal reflux, which is the movement of stomach acid into the esophagus. On rare occasions it is due to gastritis (stomach lining inflammation).”

Now let’s look at acid reflux, as cited in the same source.

“The regurgitation of stomach acid into the esophagus, causing heartburn.”

As you see, they go hand in hand. One is the cause of the by-product. Lovely.

Causes of Heartburn

So, what causes this nasty stuff to roil around in the dark regions of our sacred bodies?

Normally, our lower esophagus sphincter (LES) closes as soon as food passes through it. If it doesn’t close completely or opens too often (can you say ‘stuff your face’?), stomach acids get through and travel into the esophagus, leading to heartburn. Additionally, if you bend over or lie down immediately following a heavy meal, you’re likely to kick-start acid reflux. If you experience heartburn more than twice a week, chances are good that you suffer from acid-reflux disease or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

There are several factors that can spur the onslaught of heartburn:

  • Hiatal hernia – a condition causing the upper stomach and LES to move above the diaphragm
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Eating too close to bedtime – lying in a prone position before your food has had time to digest
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain spicy, fatty, or acidic foods
  • Alcohol, coffee, tea, and carbonated beverages
  • Smoking
  • Meds such as those taken for blood pressure; ibuprofen, aspirin, and some muscle relaxers
  • Peppermint
  • Chocolate
  • Onions

Traditional Treatments for Heartburn and Why They Do More Damage Than Good

What’s the first thing people do when heartburn hits? Probably pop a Tum or two, right? Some may even rely on the latest over-the-counter drugs that claim to ward off heartburn for 12-24 hours.

These remedies will eventually do more damage than good, and I’ll tell you why.

First, let’s take a look at antacid tablets. Do you know what’s in them?

Most antacids contain one or more of the following:

  • Calcium carbonate acts quickly and adds calcium to the body. Because the calcium levels are pretty high (500 mg-1,000 mg per tablet) do not exceed the recommended dosage.
  • Magnesium hydroxide acts quickly but can cause diarrhea.
  • Aluminum hydroxide dissolves slowly and may cause constipation. Aluminum also depletes the body of phosphorus and calcium, which can adversely affect bone strength. Aluminum hydroxide affects your body’s ability to absorb many prescribed medications. Consult your doctor before using antacids containing aluminum hydroxide.
  • Sodium bicarbonate works quickly but is eliminated from the body just as fast. It also creates carbon dioxide gas, leading to belching, bloating, and farting. People who are on a restricted sodium diet should not take antacids containing sodium bicarbonate.

A medical professional discusses the dangers of proton pump inhibitors (PPI).

Over-the-counter drugs and prescription remedies such as Pepcid AC, Zantac, and Tagamet contain proton pump inhibitors (PPI) which control or limit the amount of acid the stomach produces. This can be helpful for people who suffer from heartburn, GERD, or stomach ulcers.

However, as we’ve learned from various TV commercials, they don’t come without possible side effects. Face it; sometimes the side effects just aren’t worth it.

Are you willing to risk any of these?

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Anemia
  • Depression
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Hair loss
  • Rashes
  • Jaundice

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather deal with heartburn. But none of us have to. There are much healthier alternatives to help eliminate or alleviate heartburn, acid-reflux, and GERD. I wouldn’t be doing my duty as the self-proclaimed Mrs. Greenjeans if I didn’t fill you in, now would I?

Alternative (and Healthier) Treatments for Heartburn

I know most of us prefer natural remedies over taking medicine of any kind. We’d also prefer to avoid heartburn. For those of you who don’t have a problem with gastro discomfort, I commend you. I didn't either, until I put on far too much weight for my liking.

Pay Attention to Your Body and Learn the Triggers

As the saying goes, "prevention is better than the cure." Pay attention to the foods you eat. What foods or drinks give you a belly ache that reaches up to and through your esophagus? What time of day do those triggers fire you up? And what activities (or lack thereof) stoke the fire?

Keep a journal of what you eat for a few days; record which foods and beverages result in heartburn. Track the time of day. Are your bouts of heartburn triggered when you eat dinner at 8:30 and go to bed at 9:00?

Eliminate the foods that don’t agree with you. Adjust your schedule to allow plenty of time for your food to digest before crashing on the couch or going to bed.

Natural Combatants for Heartburn

Even when we have the best intentions and fuel our bodies with good stuff, we sometimes fall off the wagon and end up paying for it. Here are some things you can do to relieve heartburn naturally and why they work.

Eat Almonds

My mother turned me on to this trick. Chew three to six unsalted almonds immediately following a spicy or heavy meal. Some people do this before every meal as a preventative measure. If you forget, down a handful of almonds as soon as you feel heartburn symptoms creeping up. I keep a bag of almonds at my bedside since heartburn usually finds me when I’ve settled in for the night. My son, who has been diagnosed with GERD, keeps a bag at work and one in his car. Trust me; almonds do the trick.

Drink Ginger Root Tea

I discuss the many benefits of ginger root in another one of my articles where you’ll find my recipe for ginger root tea. I honestly don’t know if you can buy it ready-made; I make my own. It’s so easy to do, and you don’t run the risk of having a bunch of crap you don’t want (pesticide laden tea) in your body.

Ginger has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries by native peoples all over the world. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

Why it works: ginger combats everything from colds and flues, to inflammation, to excessive stomach acid. With regard to heartburn, ginger absorbs acids and calms the nerves that get irritated by stomach juices.

Apple Cider Vinegar

I know this might not make sense at first, but think back to basic math: two negatives make a positive.

Drink a glass of water mixed with two teaspoons of organic, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar before each meal if you suffer from chronic heartburn.

Making a salad dressing of apple cider vinegar and organic first cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil is a great way to ward off heartburn as well. Sprinkle it on your raw veggies for great flavor and a tummy-friendly alternative to bottled dressings.

Why it works: oftentimes acid reflux is caused by not enough acid in your system. It is also believed that apple cider vinegar aids in breaking down fats, which are heartburn triggers. Additionally, the acetic acid found in apple cider vinegar is purported to calm the level of stomach acids. If you find this remedy doesn’t work for you, discontinue.

Note: eating an apple before going to bed has been reported to prevent heartburn. You know what they say, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”!

Conclusion

These are just a few of the natural remedies you can use to prevent or combat heartburn. The best practice is to avoid foods and habits that lead your body to let you know it’s not happy. Excessive weight gain, alcohol, smoking and things that generally aren’t good for you anyway put your body into rebellion mode.

Even so, life often gets in the way of our best intentions and practices.

When your tummy feels the need to travel all the way up your body to let you know it’s not happy, try these remedies. They’ll save you a trip to the drug store and won’t do further harm to your precious innards.

Mark, it's almonds, not walnuts. I haven't used an antacid in years. Almonds really work.

Aloe Vera is another organic, safe option. Aloe helps to cleanse the digestive system but can also lead to diarrhea. I don't have personal experience using aloe internally, just externally. You may want to Google it to see it it's a viable panacea for you.

I can tell you, without a doubt, that eating a handful of organic, raw almonds at the onset of heartburn does the trick within seconds. I keep a bag by my bedside, in a drawer at work, and a baggie-full in my purse. Works wonders. Plus almonds are a natural source of antioxidants, provide vitamin E, can lower cholesterol, and aid in maintaining proper blood pressure levels.

You can't lose. Unless, of course, you're allergic to nuts!

First of all, congratulations Harald! I buy unsweetened vanilla almond milk. It's got a naturally sweet flavor. The brand I've been buying is Califia Farms. It's soy free, gluten free, dairy free and contains 50% more calcium than milk. It's delicious in cereal or by itself. However, I wouldn't use it for cooking something savory. For that I keep a small container of organic milk on hand. Oh yeah - almond milk has a really long shelf life. The container I have now is good until 7/2/2015. You can also go online to get a recipe for making your own almond milk. That might be worth a try because you can make a small batch to see if you like it. I really like it. I don't think I'll ever go back to drinking cow's milk.

The Amish Remedy I wrote about that I learned about from Theresa for leg cramps I noticed was clearing me of acid reflux completely and then I found out they also sell it for that and it is made of ginger, vinegar and garlic. Now if I feel anything like that coming on I take a cap full and it does me for days.

I have only ever had heartburn when I have eaten chip-shop chips (deep fried big bag of fat ladened, real potato chips with brown sauce and salt. I am a skeptic by nature. I also have bouts of acid reflux for which I take Zantac. I don't like being on medications of any sort, so when I read your article, I decided to try six unsalted almonds. Crazy, but it couldn't hurt-- and I could always fall back on the Zantac. Three nights, 18 almonds, no reflux. The skeptic in me says "coincidence" but I'm pretty sure the almonds are responsible. Flourish, I had heartburn so bad one night I propped my pillows so I was virtually sleeping sitting up. Needless to say, I didn't sleep comfortably. I've since learned to avoid the triggers. When I get to the point that I have to resort to sleeping in a sitting position, even the almonds don't give me enough relief to sleep well. It's at those times I wish I could throw up, but that never happens.

The key is to avoid the triggers.

I've been told to raise the head of the bed with bricks or whatever so that you're kinda sleeping on an incline or to sleep propped on a pillow. I don't do that because it's uncomfortable. Nellieanna, you're so right. TV ads are a form of brain-washing, both subliminally and blatantly. Look at all the ads for diet pills that say you can go on stuffing your face with unhealthy foods; just take this magic pill and watch the weight melt away! It's all under Big Pharma control.

Ginger really is a wonderful rhizome. It's benefits are almost endless.

Hello again, dear Shauna! I usually have ginger root on hand, as well as Yogi ginger tea bags. My mother gave ginger tea for colds, cramps, and tummy aches. I'm an advocate of avoiding those things by practicing good health habits in all areas, but, of course, sometimes they do catch up with someone. It disturbs me to see TV ads recommending OTC stomach problems so that the person can continue eating the things which invariably CAUSE the problems, though. Media practically encourages poor food choices AND reliance on meds! Sad. But it's an individual choice. No one has to be caught up in all that and if one hopes for a long healthy life, it's wise to make smart choices.

I've tried peppermint and ginger. Tumeric in food can also help. I've explored digestive enzymes and other aids. Omeprazole is an actual drug, but helps me sometimes, and when I'm elated, I'm usually ok. So there is a correlation with diet and mood.

I was troubled with acid-reflux often when I tried to sleep because I liked to snack on cheese and crackers hours before bed time. Well, bravewarrior, I have to take the odd Omeprazole every now and again. I take BP meds, too. Your ideas are cool, and I have in fact tried some of them. Interesting about peppermint and chocolate, though.

Yes, some of the meds you mention are close to useless. Great and informative herb. Peace.

Great ideas, Shauna! I love natural remedies, along with natural foods to begin with, which usually cause fewer problems such as heartburn. One remedy for any stomach problem I like is ginger, in tea or as a addition to foods. I'm an almond lover, too.

Martie, the key to combating heartburn is to recognize the triggers. That's why I put that tip first and foremost. You're ahead of the game because you've already had an open conversation with your body.

When you fall off the wagon, make sure you have some almonds on hand.

Sha, you have explained Heartburn and Gerd very clearly in this hub - and I think Google will agree with me.

I remember suffering Gerd at a time - five-six years ago. In my case it was the first symptoms of gall stones and cholecystitis.

I seldom get heartburn, but when I do, I know exactly why. Bread and meat pies and that extra glass of wine or second helping of a delicious dish, will most certainly send me searching for Rennies.

Sally, if these tips can get you off meds, eliminate the side effects and save you money, I will be tickled pink, and so will you. Why wait until 'soon'? Why not try it now? You have the almonds in your kitchen. Put them to use.

I'd love to have you come back and let me know how the experiment worked for you.

You still have the script, so trying natural remedies won't hurt you in the least. If they don't work for you, you have an option.

This comes at a very opportune moment. I was recently prescribed with medication for this condition. The benefits from taking the tablets has been nothing short of miraculous but I certainly don't intend taking them long term. The list of side effects which can result from taking them is quite something.

I think I am going to crack open that glass jar of almonds which I have stored in the kitchen. Some really useful tips, thank you, I intend implementing some of them very soon.

Pollyanna, I slept on my left side at the end of my pregnancy as well. It gave me relief. I guess most of the organs that can be affected by fetal growth are on the right side. Not sure, but it helped.

Try the almonds instead of calcium carbonate and water. Almonds are high in Vitamin E, biotin, manganese, copper, Vitamin B2, phosphorus, magnesium, and fiber.

Natural remedies that include natural, unprocessed foods are always preferred - and safer for the body.

I used to get dreadful heartburn at nighttime when I was pregnant. A friend suggested I lie on my left side as it eases pressure on my organs. I can't remember the exact reason behind it, but it did work for me. I try to avoid triggers now. Foods like tomatoes (especially puree), curries, and wine will give me heartburn, so I avoid eating too much of these before I go to sleep. If I do get heartburn, I'll have a glass of water and calcium carbonate.

Almonds are such an easy fix for heartburn. Had my mom not told me about it, I would have kept sucking down antacids. Almonds taste better and are much better for you! And the thing is - it really does work.

Bless your sweet heart, dear Sha, for sharing these wonderful remedies. I wish I had read this yesterday as my sweet co-worker was suffering terribly with heartburn. I have had acid reflux in the past a couple of times and have since stopped eating spicy foods late at night and now I sleep with two pillows to elevate my head. Once you have had it, it is a frightening and painful thing to endure, especially waking up in the middle of the night gasping for breathe!

Now I know and will it keep it in mind...almonds! You see I love spicy food and believe it or not, I carry my own bottle of Tabasco with me on board. Eating is just not the same without it. :) So you bet, heartburn frequents me.

What a freaking awesome hub!

I rarely get acid reflux, but when I do - i do NOT enjoy it. My ex used to get it all the time and i didn't understand how horrible it could be. He was hooked hard on the antacids even though i knew they were doing more harm in the long run than good.

Ah, well - fuck em eh? (the exes...haha)

I didn't see my nemesis listed. Taking certain vitamin supplements seems to do it for me.

Iris, the almonds and apple cider vinegar are keeping your tummy healthy. Almonds really are a power food. Tasty, too!

Before I started eating almonds for heartburn, I'd pop some Tums. Once I learned they have aluminum in them I switched to Rolaids, which don't. However, even those aren't good for the body. Now I swear by almonds. They really do work!

I rarely get heartburn. Like you, I did get it in the latter part of my pregnancies. I eat raw almonds everyday as my mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. I also use raw apple cider vinegar in dressings.

Even though I very rarely get heartburn I have in had it twice in the past six months. I popped a Tums. Next time I'll pop some almonds.

Ginger root tea is a great option for you, Ghost. It's good for all kinds of stuff and is so easy to make. I keep ginger root in the freezer for whenever the need to make tea comes up.

Sha..You need to know this hub is a gift from you to me. I have a near-drawer full of heart-burn relief information, studies, research....Seriously.

I take Omeprazole daily and it DOES work. Drawback: If you stop taking it or miss just 2 days (because you forgot to get it refilled) it's heart-burn revenge in spades! It is worse than ever. Yes, Omeprazole is OTC Prisolec, but Senorita Cheapo refuses to buy 12 capsules for $12.00 when her co-pay on an Rx is only $9.00 for 30 days. OMG, Sha I have issues, eh? I think I just admitted to choosing discomfort over spending a few bucks. I'm hopeless.

Yep, apple cider vinegar incorporated into your meals works wonders. That's why I suggested using it as a dressing. It's also good drizzled on fresh tomato slices, which can trigger heartburn due to their acidity.

I was going to include drinking milk in my tips because sometimes, when I'm rudely awakened in the middle of the night, I'll drink a small glass of Hood's nonfat milk. But my research told me milk is only a temporary fix.

I'm wondering if it's the vanilla in the ice cream and yogurt that is the panacea and not the dairy. Hmmmm.........

I don't get heartburn often, but when I have a heavy meal planned, I can almost count on a bit of reflux. So in anticipation, I use apple cider vinegar somewhere in the meal. A few tablespoons on a salad or added to steamed veggies takes care of impending heartburn.

I have taken Zantac the few times when heartburn hit me at bedtime which is about 5 times a year - not often at all. My husband has COPD so his doctor said to prop up the top of the bed so that he is elevated. It works for his breathing and it works for my reflux. If I can get out of medicating for something, I do it. I have a nut allergy so almonds are out of the question.

For those who are not watching their weight or sugar intake, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or 3 ounces of vanilla yoghurt will also do the trick.

I am loving, laughing and grooving to Survivor...if I don't watch it, I'll soon be belching... I LOVE your song selection...never dreaming such a classic would be connected with heartburn... but then look at where "Ring of Fire" has gone...right to the toilet, I tell ya, don't get me started or I'll start belching again....LOL!

I also swear by almonds -- well detailed post in a style that just catches me by the throat...ah geez, I'm belching again, where are Momma's nuts, Andy??
