How can we get rid of skin problems like pimples, skin rash, and acne? The skin is a living organism. Its functions and workings go deeper than meets the eye. Everyone knows that the skin protects the inside of the body and regulates body temperature, but how does it all work?

The Skin Is a Living Organism

The picture below of a cross-section of skin looks almost like a sea-scape.The sea-bed could be a muscle. Covering the muscle is a thin membrane of fat which could be seen as the soil for an underwater jungle of hair-roots, minute muscle fibres, nerves, blood vessels, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, all growing abundantly towards the surface. Hold a hand with the fingers closed against bright sunshine to see the thickness of your bright pink translucent skin.

Functions of the Skin

Apart from being a protective cover, the skin as a living organism has five functions:

  1. It is the organ of touch and feeling.
  2. Works as a thermostat that regulates body temperature.
  3. It is the soil for hair growth and hair movement.
  4. Secretes lubricant sebum to keep it moist and supple.
  5. Rids the body of debris through sweating, pimples and acne.

1. Skin Is the Organ of Touch and Feeling

Most of the senses we possess to touch and feel, to make us aware of our environment, lie in the fine nerve endings under the skin. Goose pimples are a sign of cold or extreme emotion as in goose pimples going down your spine when watching your favourite circus act. When you have been sitting in one position for too long, you may get pins and needles. That sensation makes you move, to allow stuck blood circulation to proceed unhindered. When it is too hot the skin tells us to take off a layer of clothing. When there is too much poison in the body the skin rejects it in the form of pimples, skin rash and acne. Each sensation demands action on our part to remedy a problem posed by the living skin organ.

2. Skin Regulates Body Temperature

Are you too cold, too hot, itchy, in pain, or enjoying a caressing breeze on your face? As they come closer to the skin surface, the nerves branch out and become thinner. If you look at the cross-section of the skin picture again you'll see that the nerve branches carry some "tactile corpuscles", which literally means “touch bodies”, pushing up curiously towards the surface to tell you what the skin feels. In addition, the subtle movement of the hair helps the body retain a safe temperature.

3. Hair Has Tiny Muscles

The skin is the soil for hair growth and hair movement; the hair root is implanted in a follicle (hair bed). Minute bundles of involuntary muscle fibers called the "arrector muscles" (encircled in red on the illustration) cause movement in the follicle to alter the angle at which the hair stands on the skin. When you are cold, the hairs stand erect to retain more body heat.

To feel how these tiny muscles work, do the following unusual hair-raising experiment.

Tiny Muscle Test

It is absolutely crucial that you relax the face during this experiment. It may be the case that, if you are unable to relax, you will not feel the action.

You will need:

  • a small pan of boiling water with a lid on it.
  • access to a refrigerator.

Note: Don’t do this experiment if you suffer from high blood pressure.

  1. Put the pan of hot water on a surface next to the fridge.
  2. Open the freezer compartment.
  3. Hold your face in or near the open freezer.
  4. Close your eyes and relax your face.
  5. Stay in the cold for 30 slow counts or more until your face feels really cold.
  6. Still keeping your face relaxed, take the lid off the pan and quickly move your face over the steam. Don’t go too close to the steam. Close your eyes and relax them. Breathe through the nose.

Wow! A tingling sensation will rise all over your cheeks. This is caused by the movement of thousands of little muscles moving each hair follicle to adapt to the change in temperature. The power within these tiny little muscles is the secret behind the success of any face rejuvenation system.

How to Reduce the Appearance of Blood Vessels

Blood vessels dilate when you are hot to let the warm blood rise up to the surface to cool off. In cold weather, the blood vessels are contracted so that little body heat is lost. It is a good idea to clean the face with warm water to allow the dirt to flush out, followed by a rinse with cold water or iced water, to keep the skin tight and clean. Little red blood vessels or broken capillaries emerging on the cheeks can be reduced to virtual invisibility by this method.

4. The Skin Secretes Lubricant to Keep It Moist

The sebaceous glands owe their name to sebum, the substance they secrete. Sebum lubricates the skin to keep it soft and supple so that it does not crack. lf the skin is exposed to a dirty environment, the oily sebum will pick up dust and dirt. In a clean environment, it would be better not to wash the skin too much, as constantly removing the sebum with soap and water deprives the skin of its own natural lubrication. When the skin has to be washed a lot, “substitute sebum” is added in the form of creams, and moisturizing products that feed the greedy cosmetics industry more than your skin. Especially old, out of date products can cause pimples, rashes, and acne. So save your face and fortune by making your own home-made cosmetics.

5. Skin Rids the Body of Debris Through Sweating

Sweating has two functions: cleaning the body and regulating body heat. Impurities in the skin and tissues underneath are disposed of through sweating. Going back to the picture of the seascape, the sweat glands are at the bottom of the sea, buried under the sand. Out of each sweat gland grows a long duct up towards the surface of the skin. The sweat glands secrete water, salt, and all the little bits of debris the skin wants to get rid of.

Pimples and Acne: Diet, Environment, and State of Mind

Diet

When there is too much poison to expel through a single pore, a pimple pops out. A pimple is an infected skin pore. Dietary conditions are most important as explained in The Dangers of Eating Meat. What you eat is what you are. lf you fill your body with poisons, your skin will reject some of those poisons in the form of pimples, sores, and other blemishes.

Environment

Environmental factors also affect the skin. In a hot, dry climate, your skin can become very dry. In a moist, cold climate, stiff and tight. After a day in the city, your face needs a sauna. After a day on the farm, you are washing off “clean dirt".

State of Mind and Emotions

Your state of mind also affects the quality of your skin. Before l started exercising my face, whenever l got into an angry shouting match with someone, or had been very upset about something, l could count on the appearance of a pimple turning into a cold sore on my mouth the next day as substantial proof of the poisonous words, thoughts, and feelings l had experienced the previous day. Feelings of stress cause negative chemical reactions in the body.

Skin Types

The cosmetics industry labels three skin types: normal, dry or oily. The truth is that skin type depends on your ancestral roots—your genetic makeup. Your skin will be more sensitive if you have a family history of eczema or poor skin condition. Nordic people’s fair hair and skin lets in more light than dark skin. Dark skin acts as a protective shade to keep harmful burning sun rays out. In short, skin type is affected by genetic, dietary, climatic, environmental, and psychological factors.

Different types of skin appear on different parts of the same face in varying circumstances. Your skin is alive and forever changing. It is thicker on your jaws, forehead, and chin than on your eyelids, lips, and neck. The skin is thickest on the scalp. The nose and forehead are often sweaty and shiny in a warm room. Before a period the skin releases more impurities than usual.

A Note On Makeup

Putting on makeup is not, as a rule, something I would recommend. Yes, l can hear you say, but what am l going to do about my red nose and those horrible little purple veins on my cheeks? Ok, make-up is pretty. Make-up is, like any form of adornment, fun and effective for special occasions but when adornment is applied routinely, it is no longer adornment, it no longer makes you feel special.

Do’s and Don’ts to Get Rid of Pimples and Acne

Do's:

  • Keep your skin bare. No makeup when you can.
  • Wash off makeup at night.
  • Make your own cosmetics.
  • Learn facial exercises

Don'ts (as a rule with exceptions)

  • Drink alcohol
  • Drink tea or coffee
  • Smoke
  • Expose the skin to hot sun
  • Indulge in *nasty foods

*meat, artificially flavoured and coloured food, sweets, chocolate, coke, etc..

If you overeat or overdrink, drink a pint of water to flush some of the poison out.

Acne Linked to Diet

According to Euro Weekly News, "After 50 years of research, clinical studies indicate there is an apparent link between diet and the development of Acne."

The results show that eating foods with a high Glycemic Index (GI) causes peaks in blood sugar levels. Foods with a high GI rating include:

  • sugary drinks
  • chocolate
  • cakes
  • white bread
  • potatoes

Foods with a low GI rating include:

  • vegetables
  • fruit
  • natural whole grain products

Experts suggest choosing a lower GI diet to keep your body at a healthy balance.

No Skimmed Milk

Drinking skimmed milk particularly has been found to cause skin to develop spots due to the high levels of hormones present. In a study carried out in 2007 at Harvard School of Public Health, results showed those who drank skimmed milk suffered from a 44% increase in developing blemishes and acne.

Since research began in the late 19th century, there have been links between diet and acne, with foods containing large amounts of fat and sugar being singled out."

In Conclusion

Now that you appreciate how many jobs the skin has to do, how it works as a living organism, you can see that your skin takes very good care of your whole body. Skin problems, pimples, skin rash, and acne can all be overcome with a helping hand from your daily habits. Avoid dietary, environmental and emotional poisons. Clean, feed, and nourish the skin with your own home-made cosmetic products and your skin's health will be guaranteed.
