What Is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is that nasty reddening and swelling of your gums you may get from time to time. It is a common oral condition, but it requires proper treatment. Otherwise, it can lead to tooth decay (the medical term is "dental caries").

Signs and Symptoms

The hallmark symptoms of gingivitis, depending on its severity, include:

  • Red, often swollen gums.
  • Bleeding when you brush your teeth.
  • Bad breath.
  • Gum abscesses.

Don’t worry if you have gingivitis. There are a number of effective treatment options. First of all, it’s useful to understand the risk factors for gingivitis.

  • Plaque build-up. Gingivitis is mainly caused by the build-up of plaques on the teeth and gums. It is the film on your teeth and gums caused by bacteria. If you haven’t quite brushed and flossed enough, you can get plaques.
  • Smoking.
  • Diabetes.
  • Stress.
  • Weakened immune system.

How to Treat Gingivitis

It is easy enough to relieve gingivitis. First of all, you need to remember to brush your teeth and gums regularly with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste specially designed for your teeth. A hard toothbrush can damage your gums and may make matters worse. Floss regularly. Remember also to visit a dentist at least once a year.

Quit smoking. You can get nicotine gum and patches to help you to do this.

Eat a healthy, balanced diet, with plenty of fruit and veggies, but not too much sugar.

You can use commercial mouthwashes, although some recent scientific research has suggested that there may be a link between very frequent use of some mouthwashes (more than twice a day) and some forms of cancer.

There are a number of good natural gingivitis cure options that you can try. However, if symptoms persist, consult your dentist. You don’t want to risk losing your teeth.

Home Remedies for Gingivitis

#1 Salt Water Rinse

Salt inhibits bacteria in the mouth and can draw the fluid out of any abscess present. It has traditionally been used to treat gum disease for thousands of years.

Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm (not hot) water, and use it to give your mouth a good rinse. Do this twice a day.

#2 Baking Soda Paste (Sodium Bicarbonate)

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a mild alkali, so helps neutralize any acid on the teeth and gums, inhibiting gingivitis and tooth decay.

Make a paste using baking soda and a little water. Apply it to your gums, and leave it for at least 10-15 minutes. Rinse your mouth with water to remove the baking soda. Repeat this treatment twice a day for better treatment result.

#3 Peppermint

Peppermint has significant antibacterial properties. To tackle gingivitis, you can make a peppermint tea, allow it to cool to around your body temperature, and then use it as a mouthwash. Do this three times a day. If you do not have a time for preparing it, tea bags are available from some suppliers, or you can make your tea from the leaves.

Peppermint oil can also be used on your gums. It is best to dilute it with a carrier oil, such as olive oil, before use. Add one part of peppermint oil to ten parts carrier oil. Do not ingest the oil while treating your mouth as adverse side effects can result.

Peppermint is easy to grow. Simply put a young plant into a partially shaded position in the moist, rich soil. Water well in the dry weather. Peppermint spreads by means of underground runners, so you may need to confine the plant. Either grow it in a large pot or put plastic boards in the soil to stop the runners.

#4 Cloves

Cloves have powerful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. You can use clove oil on the gums. Although some people like to use neat clove oil, it tends to sting and can cause inflammation. It’s best to dilute clove oil with a carrier oil, such as olive oil.

Use one part clove oil to ten parts carrier oil, and then apply to your teeth and gums. Leave the clove oil for 10 - 15 minutes, and then rinse it off with clean water. Do this remedy twice a day for the best result. Do not ingest the clove oil as adverse side effects can result.

If you prefer, you can chew cloves rather than use clove oil. However, you may find the effects more uneven.

A clove tea can also be made. Crush whole cloves, and add boiling water. Leave for ten minutes, and filter off the cloves. Allow the tea to cool to about body temperature, and then use it as a mouthwash. Do this three times a day.

A warning word: Avoid clove oil if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking blood-thinning medications.

#5 Cinnamon

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) has strong anti-bacterial properties. You can make a tea from ground cinnamon. You can also buy cinnamon tea bags from a number of suppliers. Let the tea cool to around body temperature. Use it three times a day as a mouthwash.

Note: A few people are allergic or sensitive to cinnamon. Use it cautiously at first.

#6 Garlic

Garlic is another potent natural gingivitis cure. Crush a clove of garlic, and place it on the affected gums. Garlic has strong antibacterial properties. It is best to use freshly crushed garlic, as it produces the sulfur-containing compound (allicin) when crushed.

You can add a little salt to the crushed garlic, so you get the benefit of both remedies. Also, you can add freshly-crushed garlic to your favorite salads and other dishes.

Note: It is worthwhile trying to persuade your partner to do this too so that your garlic breath won’t be so noticeable to them!

#7 Sage

You may think of sage (Salvia officinalis) simply as something that goes into stuffing, but it’s also a good home remedy for gingivitis. It is easy to grow in most states. Just plant a young plant in a sunny position in well-drained soil. The bush should last for years, easily repaying the purchase price.

You can cut sage leaves and make a tea (a few suppliers offer tea bags). Allow your tea to cool to about the body temperature, and then use it as mouthwash. Wash out your mouth with sage tea three times a day. You can also chew a sage leaf and hold it against the infected gum. Careful not to ingest the concentrated brewed tea.
