I have been using essential oils and aromatherapy to improve my health, immunity, and emotional well-being for years.

Why Peppermint Essential Oil Is a Must Have

The world of essential oils can be very overwhelming to someone starting out. There are several types of oils that promote various benefits, and it can be hard to know where to start. Peppermint essential oil is a great oil to start with and keep on hand because of the many benefits this oil brings to the table. I often use this oil to help with respiratory issues as it is perfect to clear congestion or relieve respiratory stress when diffused. It is also good for digestion, concentration, and much more. Read on to see how peppermint essential oil can help you and why it is such an important oil to have on hand.

1. Digestive Health

Many have been advised to drink peppermint tea if they suffer from common digestive issues, such as: bloating, nausea, and stomach aches. This is because peppermint naturally relaxes the intestines, which makes it easier for your body to digest food. This helps reduce bloating and nausea. For those that cannot stomach the taste of peppermint, rolling peppermint essential oil on your abdomen is a great replacement. Dilute one drop of peppermint essential oil with a carrier oil (coconut, jojoba, sweet almond, avocado, etc.) and gently rub the oil on your abdomen in a clockwise motion. You can also use a pre-diluted peppermint essential oil roll-on instead for a more convenient option.

2. Respiratory Health

Peppermint essential oil is also excellent for clearing nasal congestion and helping ease respiratory distress caused by illnesses or allergies when diffused. Add a few drops of peppermint oil to a cool mist diffuser to not only help with respiratory health, but to also purify the air in your home. Another very common essential oil blend for easing respiratory distress, especially distress that is caused by allergies is: 3 drops peppermint, 3 drops lavender and 3 drops lemon. Another option is to dilute a drop of peppermint oil with a carrier oil (or use a peppermint essential oil roll on) and rub on your chest to improve breathing.

3. Concentration and Energy

If you are like me, you need all the extra help you can get to stay energized and keep on task during a long, demanding day. Aromatherapy can help greatly in this area, and it is one of my favorite and most beneficial ways to use essential oils. There are several oils that can help give a boost of energy, or help aid in concentration when inhaled. Peppermint is one of the best and most common oils to use as it blends well with other oils. Some of the best oils to blend with peppermint are orange, lemon, lavender, grapefruit, and eucalyptus.

4. Headache and Muscle Pain

Just as peppermint oil can help relieve the symptoms of several digestive issues by naturally relaxing muscles, it can also help relieve headaches and muscle pain because of these natural muscle-relaxing qualities. Use a roll-on bottle containing diluted peppermint oil, and roll the oil on your temples and the back of your neck to help reduce tension headaches. You can also rub the oil on sore muscles to help relax tense muscles and ease pain and discomfort. You may also dilute one drop of peppermint essential oil with a carrier oil.

This is the peppermint essential oil I use when diffusing. I love that this oil is high quality, yet very affordable. The scent is very strong, but not at all overwhelming. It works wonders when my allergies are bothering me and helps clear my nasal congestion. The crisp, peppermint scent also blends well with other oils when diffusing.
