Fragrances can evoke memories, make you feel a certain way, or display your personality. Do you want to appear more confident? Are you head-over-heels in love? Let your perfume reflect that.

An article published in the International Journal of Neuroscience found that essential oils can influence mood (though this is based on limited research and studies).

I'll first show you how to make your own perfume before sharing some recipes that will hopefully inspire you!

You need to be aware of the six basic scents produced by different types of oils.

Six Types of Essential Oil Fragrances

Different types of essential oils produce different scents. Therefore, achieving your desired scent might take a bit of experimentation. To make it easier for you, you need to be aware of the six basic scents produced by different types of oils.

Each type of fragrance is listed below with a few examples of essential oils you can use to achieve those scents.

  1. Earthy: vetiver and patchouli
  2. Fruity: lemon, grapefruit, lemongrass, bergamot, orange, mandarin, and lime
  3. Woodsy: cypress, sandalwood, pine, cedar, and cassia
  4. Floral: rose, violet, jasmine, ylang-ylang, neroli, and geranium
  5. Spicy: cinnamon, black pepper, ginger, juniper, clove, cardamom, and nutmeg
  6. Herbal: basil, clary sage, chamomile, lavender, rosemary, and peppermint

Diluting Essential Oils

Undiluted oils applied directly to the skin can sometimes cause irritation and sensitivity. This is why it's important to use a carrier oil, such as coconut oil and grapeseed oil, to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin.

How To Make Essential Oil Perfumes

When making your own perfume, you can try to experiment with different types of essential oils to achieve the scent you want. Below is just a sample of how the procedure works, and you are free to substitute some of the ingredients.

Items Needed

  • 1/2 ounces of jojoba or sweet almond oil as a carrier oil
  • 2 1/2 ounces of ethanol, such as vodka
  • 2 tablespoons of water
  • Coffee filter
  • Dark glass bottle
  • 25 drops of your chosen essential oil(s)

Instructions:

  1. Add the carrier oil into the dark bottle.
  2. Slowly add the essential oils starting with the base, middle, and lastly the top note.
  3. Mix the alcohol or vodka.
  4. Shake the bottle thoroughly to mix everything together very well.
  5. Allow the mixture to sit between 2 days up to 6 weeks. The longer you allow it to sit, the stronger the scent it produces.
  6. After you have achieved the desired strength of scent, add the water into the perfume mixture.
  7. Using the coffee filter, transfer it to another bottle.
  8. Your perfume is now ready to use.
