Alternative Healing

As our understanding of the world and the true nature of reality changes, more and more people are turning to alternative healing and holistic medicine in order to heal themselves.

Indeed, according to the American Medical Association, "[prescription] medication is the third leading cause of death"—that's shocking!

Instead of relying on such medication, here are eleven alternative/holistic therapies which may help. However, please note that the information in this article should not be seen as a replacement for professional medical advice but rather as a supplement or as an alternative depending on your own choice.

1. Nature Therapy

Nature therapy (also called ecotherapy) is an all-encompassing term which can cover a wide range of therapies related to nature. It's no secret that spending time outside in nature can be extremely therapeutic but why is this?

First of all, it's relaxing and relaxation is incredibly important. From an esoteric point of view, all disease is caused by not being at ease hence the word dis-ease. All illness is caused by tension and stress, whatever form it takes, therefore relaxation is important, and being outside in nature helps us to do this.

Not only that, but as we already know, pollution is counteracted by plants, flowers and trees which absorb carbon dioxide and turn it back into oxygen thereby creating a healthy atmosphere and providing plenty of fresh air and a deep breath of fresh clean air should never be underestimated.

Places of nature, especially where there are rivers, lakes, streams or waterfalls amongst the plants and trees, also help to purify the atmosphere and they do this through negative ionization. Negative ions are good for the atmosphere and good for health and work by attaching to positively charged molecules.

When out in nature, it's good to stroll casually with good posture (which is also important), remain relaxed and simply admire and appreciate your surroundings whilst taking in a deep breath of fresh air now and again. If possible, walk alongside a river or stream while doing so.

2. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming, is a system based on known psychological principles which were developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. As suggested by the name, NLP is based on the language of the mind.

Whilst NLP is highly over-rated in many of its claims, it does contain some excellent therapeutic tools and techniques which can be extremely beneficial and many NLP practitioners are able to use it with astounding success, including Paul McKenna who used NLP successfully on his television show, I Can Change Your Life.

NLP contains some excellent therapeutic techniques for overcoming phobias, giving up smoking, overcoming depression, relieving anxiety, improving communication, treatment for obsessive compulsions, techniques for hypnotherapy and much more. NLP is quite extensive and Ericksonian (conversational) hypnosis is also a large part of it.

One of the best books about NLP available is Essential NLP by Amanda Vickers and Steve Bavister which is available as part of the teach yourself series.

3. Biomagnetic Therapy

Although there are many types of biomagnetic therapy, the traditional kind was originally developed by Dr. Isaac Goiz Duran who believed that placing magnets on certain parts of the body would balance the internal pH levels of the internal organs, glands and tissues.

The concept is not too different from Franz Mesmer's idea of animal magnetism and indeed Franz Mesmer used iron filings inside oak tubs to treat people. Indeed, Mesmer's ideas were corroborated by others including Wilhelm Reich who used modified Faraday cages called Orgone Accumulators based on similar principles in order to treat people.

Whilst biomagnetic therapy can work in a similar way to crystal healing by placing magnets on certain parts of the body, the efficacy can be increased by using specific types of magnets and certain metals in specific designs.

The easiest way of using biomagnetic therapy is simply to purchase biomagnetic bracelets and necklaces which are available on eBay and other alternative outlets. Some websites specialize in these types of devices.

4. Oscillating Coils/Tensor Rings (Radionics)

Extremely similar to biomagnetic therapy and based on the same principles are oscillating coils and tensor rings which are also closely related to radionics which, in turn, is closely related to biomagnetic therapy—all are very closely linked.

Oscillating coils are based on the invention of the Multi-Wave Oscillator by George Lakhovsky who believed that human cells vibrate at certain frequencies and that they can be brought back into balance using oscillating coils which emanate the frequency of healthy bodily cells.

As we already know, everything is just energy, frequency and vibration and so we can also conclude quite easily that this concept must hold some truth to it. Lakhovsky's work is also corroborated by others including Wilhelm Reich and Nikola Tesla.

Lakhovsky claimed that his Multi-Wave Oscillator device was capable of curing all sorts of illnesses, including terminal illnesses such as cancer. Whilst "officially" Lakhovsky's work is labelled as pseudo-science, Multi-Wave Oscillators are indeed used officially in hospitals as part of life support machines.

MW Oscillators can be purchased from online outlets such as eBay or alternative websites or alternatively, if you're scientifically minded, you can build one yourself. There are videos on YouTube that show you how to do this.

Based on the same principle as the biomagnetic bracelet, people also used to wear Lakhovsky coils as bracelets and it's also now possible to buy tensor rings, coils and bracelets which improve health and protect against geopathic stress and other harmful energies. One excellent website which sells these products is SacredCubit.co.uk.

5. Feng Shui

A simple philosophical system, Feng Shui is all about bringing harmony and balance to your surrounding environment in order to bring harmony and balance into your life and this is done through symmetry.

Arranging all the rooms in your house (particularly your bedroom, where you sleep) so that everything in the room creates a perfectly balanced symmetrical pattern is believed to create a balanced flow of Chi (life-force energy) throughout the room which helps create a balanced flow of life-force energy throughout your body.

If you're sceptical about this theory, you may want to consider that psychologists already know that the state of each room in your house (particularly your bedroom) is a direct reflection of the state of your mind and that the state of your mind has a direct effect on the state of your health, both mental and physical (which are also interlinked).

Additionally, many researchers including some of those mentioned above have come to the conclusion that all illness is indeed caused by the blockage of Chi energy throughout the body which is, in turn, caused by tension and tension is not being at ease but being at dis-ease (as mentioned at the beginning of the article which is why relaxation is also important—everything is all interconnected).

6. Reiki

Also based on the principle of the flow of life-force energy (Chi) throughout the body, is the Japanese alternative medicine, Reiki, which has become increasingly popular in recent times. Reiki healing can be considered to be the same thing as the laying on of hands and there are different levels that Reiki healers can master.

Reiki healers basically channel life-force energy (Chi) through themselves and into their patients and this can be done either hands-on close-up or can also be done long distance. It is also believed that Reiki healing can be done through time.

Reiki also uses a set of symbols that have different meanings which may very well work subconsciously, seeing as the mind reads words as symbols, recognizing them as patterns, rather than reading each letter of a word individually.

Reiki healing can also be performed long-distance on several people at a time by one healer and indeed Michael Goldberg on Facebook does this every week for free on a Tuesday evening at 9 pm Eastern US time if you'd like to try it. Just simply set your intent to receive it and at that time, lay back and relax and allow yourself to become receptive to it.

7. Crystal Healing

Closely related to Reiki, Feng Shui and Biomagnetic Therapy, Crystal Healing also works on the principle of Chi, or life-force energy, and also on the principle of energy, frequency and vibration.

Crystals are known to have a very high vibration and you can tell this simply by holding a crystal for long enough. After a few minutes, you will be able to feel the energy from certain types of crystals pulsating through your fingers or hands.

The laws of physics say that like attracts like, therefore placing a high vibration crystal on a part of your body raises the vibrational frequency of that part of your body thereby increasing its health. Crystal healing, however, is mainly focused on life-force energy, the body's aura and the seven chakras.

As suggested earlier, this life-force energy may be directly related to health-promoting, atmosphere-cleansing negative ions which are also naturally emitted by crystals. It's possible that the life-force energy of the human body is generated by the chakras which then form the aura.

Crystal healers believe that the aura, or auric field, is the metaphysical force responsible for the generation of the physical body and that all illness is caused by blockages in the aura or chakras therefore a crystal is placed on each chakra which then clears all the chakras and the entire energy field of the human body (which can be detected with Kirlian photography).

A specific color crystal is also used for each chakra. This is believed to help clear any blockages and help to align and balance the flow of life-force energy throughout the body, similar to Reiki and both can be combined for extra efficacy.

8. Orgone Therapy

Not too different from crystal healing, Orgone therapy is another method which many people claim to have had success with. Orgone is the name which Wilhelm Reich gave to life-force energy (Chi) which he derived from the words o-zone and orgasm; a life-giving force.

Reich built Orgone Accumulators which people would sit inside and relax and many people were cured of all sorts of illnesses using these devices. An Orgone Accumulator, as mentioned above, is basically a modified Faraday cage which basically blocks out all other energies and accumulates life-force energy inside of it.

Whilst you may find these devices available (although rarely), they are likely quite expensive or you could choose to build one yourself which shouldn't be too difficult as long as you can get your hands on the necessary materials.

Alternatively, many people also claim to have had success with Orgonite which is based on similar principles. Orgonite is basically a combination of organic and non-organic materials (usually metals and crystals) encased inside a fiberglass resin, the idea being that life-force energy is absorbed, cleansed by the crystals and then released again.

Additionally, the piezoelectric effect is induced due to the crystals being compressed inside the resin which is also used in medical settings for beneficial purposes and the crystals also released health-promoting negative ions. Orgonite is highly vibrational and also cleanses your aura. Many people also claim to have had success by simply placing a piece of Orgonite on their bodies and meditating/focusing on good health.

One excellent website where decent Orgonite can be purchased is PhotonOrgone.co.uk

9. Sound Baths

Another method of alternative healing which has also become increasingly popular in recent times, although it's an ancient system, is sound healing (or sound baths) and there are various ways of doing this. One popular method is to combine sound healing with crystal healing by using Tibetan crystal bowls strategically placed within an acoustically dynamic chamber.

Another method is to change the frequency of digital music files to 528-Hz which is believed to have a harmonic balancing effect and to be in tune with the natural harmony of the universe. Alternatively, it's possible to buy healing CDs and music/sound tracks, some of which may combine hypnotherapy with them by also containing subliminal suggestions/affirmations.

There are also digital MP3s and videos available online, some for free, which use sound healing for therapeutic purposes. However, a traditional sound bath usually involves sitting comfortably inside a chamber where singing crystal bowls are played and the frequencies directed at you due to the acoustic arrangement of the chamber and bowls.

10. Acupressure

Many people are familiar with acupuncture yet not many people know about acupressure, even though it's been used for thousands of years. Just as with acupuncture, acupressure is based on the concept of pressure points (although not all practitioners believe these meridians exist).

As its name suggests, acupressure is the same thing as acupuncture but is done without using needles. Instead, the pressure is placed on the pressure points (or meridians) which are believed to be associated with certain organs and the flow of vital life-force energy. As you can tell by now, many alternative therapies are based on the concept of Chi.

It is believed that the flow of Chi, or life-force energy, comes through the seven main chakras and the twelve main meridians of the human body with these meridians starting at the fingertips, connecting to the brain and then to specific bodily organs which are associated with certain meridians.

For increased efficiency, acupressure could be combined with biomagnetic therapy, crystal healing, orgone therapy, a sound bath, and Reiki all at the same time, seeing as all of these techniques are based on the same principles.

11. Video/Music Healing

Briefly mentioned above, another method of healing is by using music and videos.

A simple search on YouTube for "healing" brings up a list of over 14 million videos of a wide variety of healing techniques. This includes videos for chakra healing, binaural beats, sacred geometry videos/music encoded at 528-Hz, meditation videos and much more.

Additionally, there are also many music healing videos available on YouTube and a search for "music healing" brings up over 12 million results including music videos for releasing negative energy, purification, DNA repair, raising your vibration, clearing the heart chakra and much more.

Also, a google search for "healing MP3s" brings up many results which include audio files for Reiki, spiritual healing, relaxation, and chakra clearing and much more.

Be Well!

So there you have it. There are actually a myriad of alternative healing methods, therapies and techniques which many people don't even realize exist and some of them can be extremely powerful and extremely beneficial and many of them can be more effective than traditional medical treatment.

I myself have had astounding success with some of the techniques mentioned above. These techniques, however, should not be seen as a replacement for professional medical advice or treatment. If you are thinking of trying some of these techniques, you may want to consult your medical health practitioner first, especially if you are already receiving treatment.

Nell Rose from Buckinghamshire UK on June 05, 2018:

Hiya, great hub! I totally agree with the nature healing, not sure about the magnets etc. I would be scared to mess with the other stuff.

Finn from San Francisco on May 22, 2018:

A nice summary of some of (what I like to call New Age) perspectives on healing.

I wonder how much faith you put in these and if the combination of two or more could lead to overload.

I've also heard about sensory deprivation chambers which seems to be somewhat related to the sound baths you refer to

Nancy Yager from Hamburg, New York on September 22, 2017:

I happen to feel that many of these therapies should be replaced for seeing your doctor. Doctors should only be used in emergencies or a last ditch effort. I can say this because I am not writing the article and am not bound by the over cautious editors. Anyway, great article.

Natalie Frank from Chicago, IL on August 11, 2017:

Thanks for the useful information. There seems to be a lot of potential options for improving our health and well being that would be beneficial if we'd be open enough to try something different.
