Five Reasons You Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Make New Year’s Resolutions
Are you afraid of making a New Year’s resolution because you think that you won’t be able to keep it? Here are five good reasons to just go ahead and make those resolutions anyway, no matter how hard you think it will be to stick to your goals.
1. You Will Likely Learn Something New
Trying a new lifestyle habit, such as packing a healthy homemade lunch for work rather that wasting money on fast food, will likely involve a bit of research and planning. Perhaps you'll try new recipes or experiment with different fruits and vegetables. You might try to take a more balanced approach to your food choices so that you have more energy throughout the day. Whatever changes you make as part of your resolution will most likely require a bit of research and skills building.
2. Renewed Focus, Energy, and Perspective
Resolutions can give you a new sense of purpose—something to focus on, renewed energy, and a change of perspective. If you've decided that you want to get more exercise, why not try something completely new and see where it takes you. For example, you could take kayaking lessons, join an indoor rock climbing club, or go ice skating with your kids. Spending time outdoors, meeting new people, and being with the people you love are great ways to energize your spirit. When you stay in the moment and enjoy each activity on its own without thinking about the other 365 days of the year, or how long you think you can keep up the activity, it won't feel like you are making a resolution in the first place.

3. You're in Good Company
When you make your New Year's resolution you can ride the wave of positive energy that flows through the Universe at this time of year. So many other people will be feeling hopeful and optimistic about the future. Why not join them in their enthusiasm by getting excited about your own goals.
4. Meet New People
While pursuing your resolutions, you will likely meet new people. A the gym, at the dog park, in a class or on a hiking trail, wherever you are making changes in your life, you are also creating an opportunity for you to push out of your comfort zone, expand your social sphere and broaden your perspective.
You could make your resolutions one off events or single tasks that you do, rather than trying to commit to a set of new habits. It would be like trying to knock off a few items from your bucket list. Pick a few projects and make a plan to complete them by the end of the year. Schedule your action steps in along the way rather than trying to dive into all of your projects all at once at the beginning of the year.
5. Learn About Your Strengths and Weaknesses
You’ll find out what you have the patience and stamina for and what gets you feeling excited. For example, you may have said that you wanted to go to the gym everyday but it didn’t work out (pardon the pun). Maybe you are the type that prefers to get your exercise by doing a variety of different indoor and outdoor activities rather than using running machines and weightlifting equipment at the gym.
Think of your New Year’s resolution as a fact-finding mission, find out what you are good at, what you are lousy at and what makes you happy and what drives you up the wall. Then once you do discover the things that you are good at or at least have the potential to improve upon and then continue doing those things for the rest of the year or until you are satisfied that you have reached your goal or that an activity has had the desired effect on your health and well-being.
