1. Visualize what a joyful day looks like to you.
Making the most of every day means starting with a clear intention of what you want to accomplish that day. But that doesn't necessarily mean creating a long to-do list and mapping out how you want to go about doing all those things.. Making the most of every day could start with the simple act of naming what you want more of in your day. Choosing simple concepts such as laughter, honesty, energy, and so on is a way to tell the Universe what you want that day and then letting go and letting the Universe (or God or the Creator or your Higher Power) answer your needs in the best way possible.

2. Reach out to others and ask for help.
Get people—friends, family, co-workers—involved in helping you achieve your goal to live a simple, uncluttered life. Tell them that you plan to make small changes in your life and that you will need their help and cooperation. After all, simplifying your life will most likely involve having to say no to some of your friends and family when you need to cut out commitments. If they understand that your goal of simplifying your life will make you happier, they will less likely begrudge you your new found assertiveness.

3. Express gratitude.
When you are feeling stressed out, create a mental gratitude list and just keep adding things to it off in your head until the stressful moment has passed. It's impossible for humans to simultaneously hold both stress and gratitude in our brains. Gratitude has a natural way of cancelling out anxious feelings, so when you start to feel overwhelmed by stress, flood your brain with thoughts of all the things that make you feel blessed.
No matter how good or bad you think your day was, always end each day by finding five things you are grateful for. Write them down in a gratitude journal or share them with someone close to you, like your spouse or your best friend.

4. Compliment others.
One of the worst things about having a bad day at work or at home is the potential to take it out on those around you. So when you feel the cranky mood coming on, take a look around and find something nice to say to someone. It doesn't have to be a big gushy compliment. It could be something as simple as complimenting a piece of jewelry your co-worker is wearing, or telling your husband how handsome he looks in his sexy-man sweater. By offering a sincere compliment to someone else you take your focus off yourself and become more present, more aware of what's going on around you.

5. At the end of each day, take a few minutes to write down what you learned.
Did a child in your life tell you a funny joke? Did you learn something new that surprised you or challenged your beliefs about something? Did you make a mistake -- a flub, a gaffe, a faux-pas -- that you never want to make again in your life? Great! Write it down! As long as you are learning something new each and every day, you're making progress.
