Most people feel stress at one time or another. Whether it comes from work, a relationship, or changes in your life circumstance, chances are, you know what stress feels like.

According to the Mayo Clinic, chronic stress leads to a variety of symptoms in the body as well as emotional symptoms.

Some of the common side effects of stress include headache, muscle tension, fatigue, sleep problems, anxiety, anger, obesity, depression, and alcohol abuse.

You can learn to manage your stress levels and improve your life immediately. This article explains four easy steps you can take right now to decrease your own stress levels. Mindful practice of these four steps daily will decrease your stress and improve your life.

Simple Stress Busters Anyone Can Do


Step 1) Embrace Change

Everything changes. This is a fact. Nothing is permanent, nothing stays the same, and nothing is as solid as it seems. There is no reason to get stressed out or anxious over change. Change is a fact of life.

Instead of feeling anxious, tense, or out of control, try to embrace change. Realize that you control only yourself. You cannot control all the change in the world. Instead of trying to be in control, release your need to control and willingly embrace change.

Breathe deeply. You can do this. You can embrace change. It feels frightening and overwhelming when you acknowledge that change is inevitable and you have no control. You do have power. You have the power to change your own outlook, to control yourself, and to be willing to change.

Misery comes from clinging to what we want. Instead of making yourself miserable by insisting that things never change, release your grip. You can embrace the idea of change. It will happen either way. If you want to find peace and release stress, the first step is to accept that change is a natural part of life. Change is part of the process. Rather than resist, embrace change.

Embracing Change

An exercise suggested by Louise L. Hay in her book, "You Can Heal Your Life," can help you learn to embrace change.

Look into the mirror. Look directly into your own eyes. This may feel uncomfortable, but stay with it. As you look into your eyes, repeat the following mantra: "I willingly embrace change." Say it ten times while looking yourself in the eye.

It may feel uncomfortable. It may bring up fear or resistance. Persist through the fear. Be strong, and allow yourself to embrace change. Speak it to the universe. Be willing to flow with change as it comes into your life.

Step 2) Release Fear and Resistance

There is no need to feel stress or anxiety. Those emotions arise when you resist what is happening. Release your resistance to events and circumstances, and release your fear and your anxiety, and stress will dissolve.

Usually, resistance comes from past events or future events. When something happens in the here and now, you deal with it. If you feel yourself resisting, take a deep breath and examine your thoughts. What are you fearing or resisting?

If you resist something in the past, let it go. You cannot change it, and you cannot fix it. Struggling about it today does nothing but create anxiety and stress. Let the past go. It is done.

If you resist a thought about the future, let it go, too. You can't fix what hasn't happened. Stop predicting what you think, and let go of resistance. Your anxiety heightens as you imagine all the worst case scenarios for your future.

If something is happening now, and you feel resistant to it, examine your thoughts and feelings around the event. What can you change? What can you control? Let go of things outside your influence, change what you can, and release your fear and resistance.

You Have Power


Step 3) Choose Your Response

You are not a victim. You are the creator of your life. Every day, you have a choice. You can choose how to respond to each situation as it arises, or you can ignore everything around you, and allow circumstances and other people to decide for you.

When change occurs in your life, you can choose how to respond. You are not a helpless victim thrown this way and that by circumstances. You can choose exactly how to respond to each situation as it comes up.

First, you acknowledge that change is an inevitable part of living. It happens, whether you like it or not. Now with that fact, how do you respond? You can get angry about the injustice of life. You can also choose to flow peacefully.

No one can make you do anything you don't want to. If people in your life try to threaten or coerce you into certain behavior, you can decide for yourself what you will do. My husband recently applied for a job out of state. Immediately, I jumped into victim mode: "How can you make me move?" How can you do this to our children? How could you possibly expect me to leave my business?" After a few hours of pouting, I remembered the truth. Change is inevitable. The truth is, I could stay here if I want to. I could keep my business. I could move my business to another state. There are lots of options if I choose to look at my own strength.

Second, when choosing your response, remember to release fear and resistance. I felt immediately fearful about the possibility of moving. I resisted the idea of uprooting the kids from school. Instead, the truth is that nothing has happened yet. I don't have to decide anything until he has a firm offer on the table. I still have choices. I am not a victim, and neither are you.

You always have a choice in life. Hold on to your personal power, and remember that you control how you think, what you say, and what you do. No one else controls your life but you.

Drink a glass of water

Have a healthy snack

Take a walk outside

Take a nap

Repeat as necessary, until stress is gone

Step 4) Remember the Truth

The truth contains great power. Remember the truth of who you are. You control your life. When you remember the truth of who you are, then there is no reason to feel stressed.

We are all spiritual beings experiencing an earthly journey. You are a light being. Your soul is in charge. Regardless of what goes on in the physical realm, your main purpose here is to help others remember the truth of who they are.

Relax into the truth. Embrace the truth. There is nothing to fear. Life is a beautiful journey. When you forget the truth, your body begins to experience stress and tension. There is no need. Release resistance and enjoy your soul journey.

      Stress can be a real issue for many of us, especially with small children at home, multiple jobs or careers in the household, and being in a caretaker role. Unexpected things happen, and it is easy to fall into the victim mode. For me, talking with others about what is happening helps, also relaxation, exercise, listening to music, and resting.

      I turn off the tv. Haven’t listened to local news in years because of the negativity and with the Trump stuff and all the hurricanes etc., I do 5 minutes at the top of the hour then off it goes. Petting my cats helps me and them too.
