Healing Agents Listed in the Bible

MsDora, Certified Christian Counselor, explores facts, attitudes and habits which can help us maintain our physical and mental wellbeing.

Many individuals think only about swallowing a pill or potion when they suffer headaches, indigestion, foot ache or any other form of discomfort. Dr. Deepak Chopra, alternative medicine advocate, does not recommend that approach. “This is not to say that pharmaceutical and surgical interventions are not warranted,” he explains, “but looking to them to solve all our illnesses has made us as a society to overlook the powerful self-healing mechanisms within us.”

Negativity and worry feed ill-health, even after we take the medication; so the pharmaceuticals, beneficial as they are, need our help. The doctor's list of self-healing mechanisms includes positivity and spirituality; and John Weiss, states on The Positive Psychology Blog that the benefits of positive thinking can result in "a decline in high blood pressure, weight, stress levels and other negative symptoms."

Following are some Bible quotes from the New Living Translation which propose physical and emotional healing with other than pharmaceutical agents. These healing aids contribute to our well-being whether we give or receive them.

Positive Qualities

Cheerfulness

1. A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health. (Proverbs 15:30)

Faith

2. Jesus turned around, and when he saw her [the sick woman] he said, “Daughter, be encouraged! Your faith has made you well.” And the woman was healed at that moment. (Matthew 9: 21,22)

Integrity

3. Fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones. (Proverbs 3: 7, 8)

Peacefulness

4. A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body. ((Proverbs 14:30)

Obedience

5. He [Moses] said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases . . . for I am the Lord who heals you.” (Exodus 15:26

Wisdom

6. Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing. Proverbs 12:18

Positive Deeds

Compassion

7. Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help. “Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal.” (Isaiah 58: 7, 8)

Encouragement

8. Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. (Proverbs 16:24)

Intervention

9. Four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. . . Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”

And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. (Mark 2: 3, 4, 10-12)

Spirituality

Confession

10. Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. (James 5:16)

NOTE: "This passage of Scripture . . . affords no foundation for the Popish practice of auricular confession to a priest." (Benson Commentary) It counsels believers to confess their "faults" (King James Version) to each other so that they could pray about specific weaknesses.

Conscience

11. Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. (Matthew 6:22)

NOTE: "Conscience is the eye of the soul." (W.F. Adeney, The Expositor's Bible). A healthy conscience impacts our spiritual and moral health and our entire being.

Discipline

12. Lord, your discipline is good, for it leads to life and health. You restore my health and allow me to live! (Isaiah 38:16)

Intercession

13. Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5: 14)

Prayer

14. O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you restored my health. (Psalm 30:2)

Repentance

15. “My wayward children,” says the Lord, “come back to me, and I will heal your wayward hearts.” (Jeremiah 3:22)

Shauna, I like your mom's saying. Thank you for sharing.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on July 26, 2019:

Good for you, Lawrence. Keep on treating yourself well, and enjoying the best of health.

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on July 26, 2019:

These are all wonderful reminders to uplift and be uplifted through thoughts and actions. My mom always says, "pretty is as pretty does". I think that applies here as well.

Lawrence Hebb from Hamilton, New Zealand on July 04, 2019:

MsDora

So many of these resonated with me. I probably use them all the time, but not really think about them.

Thank you for the reminders here.

Lawrence

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 17, 2019:

Marie, I'm sure that fasting could be added as a self-healing mechanism. Thanks for mentioning it.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 17, 2019:

Shaloo, it is my pleasure. Thanks for stopping by.

Marie Flint from Jacksonville, FL USA on June 17, 2019:

Although I was hoping some herbs and fasting would be mentioned in this piece, it is nicely written and heart warming. Thank you!

Shaloo Walia from India on June 17, 2019:

Such profound quotes... thanks for sharing!

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on June 15, 2019:

Hi, there, our faith is the key to unlock the "medicine" in the word of God. Confession is another. What we believed about the word of God we confess and God assents to that and make the reality of it in our lives. Thanks for weighing in.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 14, 2019:

True, Peg. Sometimes the medicines do not work without the faith, prayer and so on being included. We're more than body and need more than physical remedies.

Peg Cole from Northeast of Dallas, Texas on June 14, 2019:

Great reminders about faith, joy and prayer and confession. Thanks for these uplifting and rewarding remedies.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on June 14, 2019:

Cool indeed.

Eric Dierker from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on June 13, 2019:

Back to read again. This will help be "more better weller" today. That is just how my kids and I address cancer. Cool huh?!

Antonio50S on June 13, 2019:

Sorry, It wasn't ( 1 Kings 18:18 ) though that was true as well, reason for Israel's troubles. Baal.

( It was Vs44 where Elijah never doubted at all )

"Go and tell Ahab, Hitch up" - "before the rain stops you" That's FAITH :)

Antonio50S on June 13, 2019:

Been thinking a lot about ( James 5:16-17 ) Vs17 "Elijah was a man just like Us" but when he prayed for it to rain in ( 1 Kings 18 ) he never doubted at all, I don't think he even knew the concept of doubt when talking to God. Vs18 made that clear.

Regarding physical healing's, the disciples were limited in what they were able to do and never had the power to raise the dead. Any physical healing in this life was only temporary. Raising the dead is the easy part, but to "Cure Ourselves & Other's spiritually" is the prime thing that will lead to all sickness and death a thing of the past. ( Rev 21 )

The ALMIGHTY definitely knows what he's doing, he don't take away our thorns because he knows they will lead to life in the end.

Quoting what you said to Bill Dora, when we intercede, intervene or encourage, despite how it makes us feel, which is good as well, "the real benefit is for the sick" be it "spiritual or physical"

You know, sometimes while God is not Curing us, He's actually saving our lives, and we get to see that in the end providing we ourselves have faith & trust, pref like Elijah.

It looks like we can ALL be Elijah's for now.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on June 12, 2019:

Good to note, please.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 12, 2019:

Thanks, Tim. I appreciate your continually kind and supportive comments.

Tim Truzy from U.S.A. on June 11, 2019:

Thank you, Sm. Dora. Your articles are always good reading, food for the soul and heart. I love this particular statement:

8. Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. (Proverbs 16:24)

Nothing can be more healing than a kind word and comapssionate heart in troubled times. Well written and informative as always, Ms. Dora.

Respect and admiration,

Tim

Antonio50S on June 10, 2019:

Thanks Dora. I think you're a GREAT inspration to many & to me.

There's nothing in the world that's more satisfying than doing something because we want to.

Them are the kind of people God is close to.

Elijah the 2nd :)

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 10, 2019:

Linda, what a blessed encouragement you are! You also lift me up. We contribute to each other's healing. Thanks.

Antonio50S on June 10, 2019:

( James 5:16 )

Never been to sure if that literally means confessing sins to each other ? Maybe minor ones ? Since it says the "Prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective"

Verse 17 Gives the Example of "Elijah"

Whatever the case, all these verses are Great healing verses, but i don't thing they should ever be confused with "doctrinal" teachings.

Some faith groups feel very strong about certain doctrines and associate the 2 together, which in turn causes difficulties for some instead of healing.

Nobody's perfect. For that reason, there's no perfect faith group or religion with perfect sets of doctrines either.

"Rich Mullings" Got it right when he said, "It's not where we go, it's who we follow" Anywhere we go after that, ( If we choose ) should help us along the way. If it don't we should be able to walk away from it without being tied to sets of doctrines.

Either way, we can cary these healing verses wherever we go.

Linda Lum from Washington State, USA on June 10, 2019:

Dora, when I saw the title of this article, I assumed it would be a discussion of herbs. What a delightful surprise to instead find a list of all of the true healing that our God gives us not in body (which is temporal) but in spirit which is eternal. That's the part that matters.

Making the lives of those around us happy--there isn't a better feeling. Thank you for lifting us up. Blessings to you this day.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 10, 2019:

Blossom, what a blessing to be the intercessor for a family you love. May God respond with favor. Thanks for dropping by.

Antonio50S on June 10, 2019:

I noticed something about you Dora & a few others on here.

You've changed. You've become better people.

You are "all" in danger of becoming seriously good people.

The healing Agents must be working.

Bronwen Scott-Branagan from Victoria, Australia on June 09, 2019:

Thank you for a wonderfully positive article. It's so timely when I'm praying for a miracle for the health well-being of a family I love.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 09, 2019:

Thanks Flourish, for your encouraging comment. I appreciate your continual kindness.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 09, 2019:

Bill, there are so many different perspectives that we would adopt if we ever heard them. Think of it. When we intercede, intervene or encourage, we are performing a good deed on behalf of someone else and the good feeling we feel increases our good-feel enzymes like oxytocin which improves our well being.

FlourishAnyway from USA on June 09, 2019:

I believe in the mind/body connection as a terrific supplement. These are inspirational passages to encourage and uplift.

William Kovacic from Pleasant Gap, PA on June 09, 2019:

"Healing yourself is connected with healing others." I never thought of it that way before, but what a good point. Your whole article was a good point. Thanks for sharing it with us, Dora.

Eric Dierker from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on June 08, 2019:

whoops Dora I got some pride and felt not well but the big guy spoke through you.

(Matthew 9: 21,22) I am that woman, I just need to remember.

Bless you.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 08, 2019:

Lorna, kudos to you for choosing the holistic approach to healing. Happy to share these Bible verses.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 08, 2019:

Bill, I'm happy that you found the quotes interesting. I love Bible and I'm anxious to share.

Lorna Lamon on June 08, 2019:

These are wonderful verses with self healing qualities and advice. I have always been interested in a holistic approach to healing and the bible verses mentioned are certainly uplifting.

Antonio50S on June 07, 2019:

That bible verse you mentioned ( James 5:16 ) what a "fantastic" verse that is. "The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power" but the verses prior to that encourages the "Spiritually" sick to call out the elders to pray on their behalf. And ( IF ) they committed any sins ? They will be forgiven "As Well"

The healing process going on in these veses are based on the ( Recognition & Positive approach ) of the Sick Person.

God know's we're all Sick deep down, and he want's "all of us" to know it as well and approach him in faith. He also don't want any of us ever looking back to former good times. God is in ( FORWARD MODE ) and his mercies are new each day.

GREAT verses dora.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on June 07, 2019:

Hi, Dora, the Holy Bible is my first standard on healing. I agreed with all the scriptures you mentioned. I used the KJV all the time. But I do not see you mentioned 3John 2! my favorite healing scripture. Thanks, for sharing.

Antonio50S on June 07, 2019:

Thank's Dora.

Hebrews 12:1-3

What a privilege to be surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses down through the ages including "yourself" and "many others here"

I would like to include myself, but all i see is my faults. Maybe that's a good thing. Once again, GREAT bible verses.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on June 07, 2019:

This was an interesting journey through the Bible, as all of your articles are. You are a teacher whether you have teaching credentials or not. :) Blessings always!

Antonio50S on June 07, 2019:

Compassion. No7 Isaiah 58:6-8

"Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help"

Some of the best Solutions to World Poverty are found in them Old Testament Laws dating back over 3000 years. "To many to mention" but 2 such examples are found in ( Deuteronomy 15:7-8 & 24:19-21 ) when harvesting the fields, the Israelites were commanded to leave what was left over to the poor, the widows & fatherless & Verse 22 was a reminder that they were slaves in Egypt. And despite the fact that the Israelites never noticed their clothes even wearing out while in the wilderness, God is the one who "kept them alive"

No matter what country we live in ? Next time we're tempted to boast about ( "OUR" WELFARE OR BENEFIT SYSTEM ) It's good to keep in mind, ( God is the Originator of that System, NOT MEN ) Also when tempted to "look back" in a nostalgic way to better times gone by, the Israelites did just that as well, but they were reproved by God.

We/Mankind do have a habit of "Looking Back" to better times in a selfish way, but how we treat the poor & homeless, fatherless & widows, including immigrants from other parts of the world, will all have a bearing on how we ourselves will get judged in the end.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 07, 2019:

Antonio, thanks for your input. Truly, forgiveness is a major healing agent. Glad you included that.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 07, 2019:

Thanks, Lori. Many times our healing begins with our asking, which gives us access to God's healing and everything else. I appreciate your contribution.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 07, 2019:

Jackie, praying that the surgery goes well and that you have a full recovery. Your faith in God will pull you through.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 07, 2019:

Eric, you are blessed. Your life can only get better.

Antonio50S on June 06, 2019:

Oh Dora, here i am reading again, GREAT bible verse quotes.

They transcend all faith groups claiming absolute truth.

About ( Mathew 6:22 ) that's one of my favourite verses, but i don't think it's anything to do with "Conscience" at all.

It's about keeping all of life as "simple" as possible & focusing on things that really matter most in life. ( A "good" eye is one that is fixed on God ) NLT commentary. ( We cannot serve 2 masters )

Another Healing Agent is forgiveness.

How can we heal others if we cannot forgive them ?

Lori Colbo from Pacific Northwest on June 06, 2019:

Hi Dora, you always pick such interesting topics and you are so thorough and you structure it well. I think positivity as a lifestyle is good and can indeed create a more healthy body for sure. Stress is responsible for most of our physical and emotional ills. But I like the Bible verses you quoted because we can see the hand of God.

I love the story where blind Bartimaeus and another blind guy called out to Jesus for mercy. Jesus asked them "What do you want me to do for you?" They said they wanted to see and he made it happen. Sometimes we just need to ask. We receive not because we ask not. I can see you put some research into it. It is an inspiring piece. Thank you so much.

Jackie Lynnley from the beautiful south on June 06, 2019:

I am certainly not without my problems and have a major surgery coming up in a few weeks but as I tell everyone I do not fear death and what better way to go than in your sleep even in surgery? I do live by the facts by His blood I am save and one many of us forget is by His stripes we are healed. Certainly no promises nothing comes upon us but we have to have faith in the promises.

You gave wonderful scriptures, Dora. Ones to strengthen our faith! Nothing more uplifting than the Word and promises of God!

Eric Dierker from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on June 06, 2019:

Dora you would not think so maybe if you saw me now. I am weeping over "Christmas" . I know it is June but every day around here is Christmas. Little Drummer Boy Slays me.

I was reading Plessy vs Ferguson. Knowing it was a small step the beginning of equality here. For sure my eldest daughter is right -- I have got to get a life.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 06, 2019:

Pam, hope is a self-healing mechanism. Sorry about the medical problems. Keep the faith!

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 06, 2019:

Liz, I agree we need the medical and the natural. We just don't want to neglect the self-healing mechanisms because they make healing more complete.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 06, 2019:

Eric, you're my kinda guy. "Not because I am sick but because he wants to check out why I am not sick." I think that sickness hates not having any fun in your body. You have all the right healing agents: love, humor and selflessness.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on June 06, 2019:

RevMargaret, thank you for stopping by. I love Bible Study research. There's so much to learn.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on June 06, 2019:

I believe all of the scriptures, and I pray a minimum of every night and first thing in the morning. I have had 2 failed back surgeries with a large amount of nerve damage, a numb left leg with both feet numb and a host of other medical problems. I find I must use some medications, but I hope to be healed. I have been prayed for many times also.

I will say my osteoarthritis seems to have stopped being painful. I wish I had believed more in the power of the Lord's healing when I was young with lupus as that is really behind all my problems. I keep a positive attitude despite my problems. This is an excellent article Ms Dora.

Liz Westwood from UK on June 06, 2019:

This is an interesting article. All the points you make can feature in all-round well-being. Personally I favour a combination of these and medical intervention when necessary, as Ifeel that both work together.

Eric Dierker from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on June 06, 2019:

Dora I have to go see my oncologist for my Non-Hodkins Lymphoma next week. Not because I am sick but because he wants to check out why I am not sick. Oh sure I do my elixirs from turmeric to Cayenne and Bitter gourd but those are more like praying in thanks.

We just do not do well here. Wei in fact we refuse it. We always insist in prayer and supplication that with God well is a bit below. We like to say super duper and tomorrow will kick today's butt in glory.

I will read this with my Gabe today.

A positive attitude is what Jesus meant in 1 John 4:8

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

We can heal ourselves and then heal others.

bless you for this.

Margaret Minnicks from Richmond, VA on June 06, 2019:

MsDora, thanks so much for sharing this article about healing agents in the Bible. You did some thorough research to come up with a list and 13 scriptures to support what we need to be healed.
