Put Yourself on a Personal Retreat
Sometimes It Is All About You
Taking a personal retreat is not only good for you, but it's also good for those around you. You can go on a retreat with the purpose of reflecting over a specific problem, or just because you want to promote general wellness. There are times when we just need to get away and be on our own. The clatter of everyday life is starting to be a drain, and it is best to just remove yourself for a little while so that you can gain strength to deal with what you have on your plate.
There is nothing wrong or selfish about taking time for yourself. By taking some time out for yourself, you will be better at taking care of and working around the people in your life. Retreats help you to refocus and make adjustments in your thought process, giving you a more optimistic outlook.
Going on a Personal Retreat Without "Going" Anywhere
Being on a personal retreat doesn't mean that you necessarily have to go somewhere to be on retreat. When the word retreat pops up, we usually think of an expensive 3-7 day retreat resort with yoga classes and early morning meditation. While that is excellent to do, we might not have the funds or the time.
A personal retreat is really more about being by yourself and taking some downtime. It's your time to reflect and take care of yourself. Relaxing and centering yourself is the main focus. You can do this in your home, your car, or a close-by park or lake. It is where ever you can create a peaceful and calm space.
Remove Yourself From Negative Information
Being on retreat can be as simple as just removing yourself from negative information. Removing yourself from negative information for a certain period of time will give your mind and spirit a chance to cleanse itself. It can be overwhelming with all of the negative news and media that we are exposed to every day. Take just a few days away from watching the news and negative themed shows along with what you listen to and read. If the information is upsetting to you or changes your peace of mind in some way, then turn it off or put it away.
It's interesting that when I've ever done this, I find that when my set time is up I am no longer interested in some of the things that I was watching or following before. A show that I used to religiously watch, even though it would upset me in some way, I now suddenly have no desire to watch it anymore. We all fall into ruts occasionally about what information we take in.
Create A Personal Retreat At Home
Create your own personal retreat right in your home. Take a day or even two if you can and be at home with just yourself. Shoo everyone out and plan a nice little retreat for yourself. Totally remove yourself from the world for a little while. Turn your phone off or if you can't because of family, let them know beforehand that it will be on vibrate and you will check it occasionally.
Spend your time doing something that feeds your soul. Lighting your favorite candles and reading about something that you are passionate about or inspires you. Be creative whether that is writing or creating good healthy food with a dash of love sprinkled in for yourself. Play your go-to happy music or some chakra vibrational tones. If getting rid of old stuff and de-cluttering feeds your soul, then, by all means, clean out that junk drawer or get after that closet.
Whatever calms and feeds your mind and spirit. You will be surprised at how taking just one day to spend in your home by yourself will change your outlook and put your mind more at peace. If you had a problem that you were dealing with before the retreat, you will feel more energized to come back and deal with it in a more optimistic way.
-Turn the TV off and listen to uplifting information instead.
-Take long baths with meditation music and aromatherapy scents.
-Read inspiring books or articles.
A Quick Retreat
Not everyone can take a day or two alone in their home or even just alone. You can still make a quick retreat. Carve out some time that is just for you. Two hours, one hour, half an hour. Whatever you feel that you can spare and be spared by everyone else. If you have to, let whoever depends on you know that you are going on a mini-retreat and you will get back to them when you are done.
-Create a spa in your bathroom and lock the door.
-Go for a pretty drive in the country.
-Listen to meditation music or just nothing at all and enjoy the silence.
-Take a walk in the park. Bring a book or a journal with you.
-Go to your bedroom and close the door. Put a sign on the outside of the door letting the household know to DO NOT DISTURB.
-Go to an art museum or somewhere that feeds a passion of yours.
Leave Your Ego Out Of It
Going on a personal retreat is not ego-driven, it is soul-driven. Taking a retail therapy trip or hitting the local pub or ice cream stand is not a personal retreat. If the excursion makes you feel guilty or causes problems later, then you are defeating the purpose. The idea is to take some time out for yourself and let your mind, body, and soul rejuvenate.
